Every niche is the most profitable if you can put that twist on it.
I've taken some of the most saturated niches I could find and try to turn them profitable for a lazy weekend project and turned them profitable.
So you wanna find a profitable niche? Take your pick. Now put a random as fuck, yet sexy as hell twist on it, and I'm willing to bet if you were creative enough, you'll make money from it.

Took me 5 weeks to get on page one, and was knocked to page 3 the next week. lol.
The people who get to the top of the meso niche are making some insane amounts of money, but are also spending a massive amount of that money keeping themselves there.

I think any niche where there is desperate need but much mystery and blame-shifting potential when the product you're selling fails to work is a profitable niche. Also, when there is a huge portion of your potential customers only in it to dream and not even expecting real world results (why WSOs do so well).
Weight loss, PUA, and make money online products all fit that criteria. Essentially, if you fail at those activities when following a guide/using a product someone sold to you, you are more likely to see it as a personal failure - meaning you don't chargeback or start online campaigns to ruin the seller's name, and might even buy more products from them in shame.
You often hear people say that niches where desperation is involved is a good niche. But that is only half the story. Desperation and the implication that your problem is entirely due to personal failings is what makes a good niche. Desperation alone will lead to high sales, but then much chargeback coupled with possible lawsuits from the surviving family members.

Don't know if you are trolling or not, but both of these seem really competitive. What was your strategy? Ranking well in the SERPs? Building a brand and encouraging repeat sales?

They work different - what your get per deal is very low.
But its a mass market.
There is no difference in the income when you get 100 per deal or only 1 for 100.
What you need there is a base which brings the traffic. Thats the hard part.
To make money then is easy.

Please just forget payday loans ... they are not as HOT as they were before 2010.
My TOP3 atm:
US: forex (!), dating, job offers
UK/Ireland: sport betting, job offers, gold/silver investment
Western EU: forest investment, dating - in ES/PL: job offers (!)
Eastern EU: replica watches, casino, foreign job offers
... and I make about 6k USD pure profit in each every month w/ these above.
