Not going to question the morality, but just the absolute stupidity of the women. Does she think her son is going to stay 2 feet long forever, or something? When that kid is full grown and 6 feet tall, that tattoo is going to really pretty shitty. Actually, that tattoo is probably going to look all shitty and warped within about 6 months.
You're comparing your child's willful and voluntary act to what seems to be, in this case, a non voluntary act, considering that the mother had to physically restrain her child while it screamed in pain. That's torture.Work on your reading comprehension
I let my 2 year old get her ears pierced. She wanted ear rings like her mom, we warned it would hurt really bad. Of course she didn't understand the permanence of it, but I did and given the cultural reality it wasn't something I was against. She sat their brave as could be and only winced a little.
She'll be 4 in a couple months and LOVES her earrings.
My point? Cultural barbarity is bullshit to judge on shit like this.
So what if it's culturally sanctioned? Culture does not determine what is right and wrong.

You said that this is:
1) Common in cultures all around the world.
2) Nothing compared to circumcision. Only a little more extreme than piercing your baby's ears.
3)None of our business
Number 1 may be true, but it tells us nothing about whether or not the act is justified.
As for number 2, I agree that it's no more barbaric than circumcision, or piercing your baby's ears. but you seem to be implying that because it's no more barbaric, that that is somehow a mitigating factor. Why should it be?
Cutting off someone's arm may be no worse than cutting off their leg, but it doesn't follow that cutting off their arm or their leg is okay because neither is worse than the other.
Simply comparing it to circumcision tells us nothing about whether it, or circumcision, or piercing a baby's ears, is okay.
You also related the story about your child wanting to get her ears pierced, but doesn't choice make all the difference? To me it does. I don't see any parallel between a little girl wanting to get her ears pierced, and what is ostensibly a child being forced to do something he does not want. So I don't know how you end up with the idea that it's “none of our business” or that “Cultural barbarity is bullshit to judge on shit like this.”
