Multiple IP's - how necessary?

Between today and tomorrow
I have a WPMU with a bunch of small sites now - trying the waters. i am doing dfb's to a couple of them; a few others old Angela's links, and some others waiting for attention.

My plan was to keep them all on the cheap shared hosting (using Hostgator) for now, until one starts to show some tractiona, and then break it off to a separate hosting - with its own IP, etc.

My questions:

  • how important is a separate IP for my diff sites? note that i am not linking from site to site - i am starting to use a tiered BL approach, in addition to the dfb and Angela-type , which are direct to the money site.
  • is there a hosting company that is better than Hostgator?
thanks,

Just throwing this out there. I spoke with my dedicated host about unique IP's for all domains. They said it's only crucial if you're going to use SSL to have a unique IP. And for G to penalize a shared IP doesn't make sense, as it would effect everyone else using the same IP (that has nothing to do with your site)....

thanks - that's what i thought, logically. in that way, the cheapo shared hosting would theoretically work in my favor, since there would be lots of domains doing all sorts of stuff, and so my 5 domains getting dfb's etc. would be lost in the shuffle.

see how it goes. but treating an IP and treating a domain are two different things. If one domain is ranking well on an IP, that doesn't mean all other sites on that IP will rank well. If one domain is spamming, doesn't mean all other domains are spamming etc.......
