Hi all

I have an static site, its on good postion on required keywords, but now i want to redesign my site, will it effect on SEO work ?? Because i dont want to loose ranking...

Thanks

As long as you don't change header tags (title, meta description, etc), or your heading text (H1 H2 etc), or any text that is bolded, or image tags you should be okay. Design it all before you upload it then keep an eye on it for a couple weeks (and backup your original site design just in case)

just make sure you retain your content structure as well as your internal linking structure and you should be set.

What if I'm working on a site I've bought that has fairly decent rankings (Bottom first page/top second page google) and the link structure is currently very poor (ie: all 200 pages in top directory - no sub folders at all!)...

And to top that off, there isn't a single H1, H2 or non spammy meta tag on the whole site. The whole thing reeks of spam, but as I said, still performs quite well in G (probably due to domain age (1999)). The site also has a list of a couple of hundred keywords on the home page... as I said, reeks of spam, but G seems to like it...

So, who would risk adding correct link structure, quality tags and complete website overhaul?

I was thinking about replacing the whole site, and 301'ing any old pages to the relevant new page.

Do we think this will help or hurt rankings???

make sure the URL's stay the same or you will be completely screwed for a long time to come.

Why mess with success? If it's ranking, let it be. If it starts to slip, then that would be the time to go in and give it an overhaul. I have a site in the same boat. It's ranking great but when I built it I didn't SEO it too well. I am tempted to go back through, rip it up, and build a proper link structure but at the same time - if it ain't broke, don't fix it. :D

You're kidding right? This is bad fucking news. I thought it was in Googles guidelines that 301'ing was okay...

Look here:
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2008/04/best-practices-when-moving-your-site.html

The url's on my site at the moment are crap - 001.htm etc...

Plus, everything is in the main domain folder. Not one singles sub folder on the whole site - it's a right mess, and a chore to find a page to edit it.

And thanks for the input MyOwnDemon, but ranking in position 10-12 in this niche is not good. I could be getting another 10,000+ visits a month in top 5 upwards.

Shit, not sure what to do! I might risk it.... :anon.sml:

So - has anyone got any ideas of how to turn a site from all .htm to all .php and keep my rankings in Google?
