Need a Crash Course in Proxies

Hello everyone, my name is Charles and I am a complete n00b on the subject of proxies.

OK, I am not new to SEO, Affiliate or Internet marketing but I know next to nothing about proxies. My business has gotten to the point where I need automation software to supplement my VAs and outsourcers. I am noticing most suggest and offer that you run the software via proxies. I understand why you want to do this but I know very little else.

1. Where do I find a list of proxies to use?
2. How do I know they are any good?
3. How can I update my list?
4. Are there proxies I should avoid?
5. What else do I need to know?

I realize I can Google this info but I was hoping someone could point me to a good resource for proxies and using it in BH (or at least aggressive) online strategies.
