Okay, so I have done some research on the various different dedicated servers available, but I really don't have a clue what I need since I'm just getting started. I'll be using this for my future empire of affiliate pages. Im thinking either Liquidweb or Softlayer, but I have no idea how I should configure my box.

Straight up and jumping into a dedi is awfully expensive for just starting out. Why not start with a VPS and then scale up until you can actually use a dedi?

See this is exactly why I asked. I just dont know the load I'll be putting on the server yet (probably low since Im just starting). I was looking at the monthly expense and thinking it might make things a little tight the first few months, just seemed like most people were really happy that they had moved from vps to dedi. when is the proper time to scale to a dedi though? Obviously this is something I will need to consider in the future.

When you start pushing CPU resources well past 20-25% you might start preparing for a dedi. (sometimes sooner than that, since the server you're shared on, might not only have 4 people on it). VPS can easily have guaranteed memory up to about a gig. So when you start toping that, memory-wise should probably go with a dedi (or check to see which script is leaking like a somofabitch).

I currently use Knownhost with a 512MB (burstable to 2GB) VPS. They're cheaper, but if you want almost one of the best out there, most seem to suggest a VPS with LiquidWeb. (around 60$ or so a month for the 20GB storage with I think 256MB memory).

Right now on my VPS, even though its about 20 sites, mostly wordpress sites, an email server (without spamassasin), ftp/shell, and so forth. Its consuming about 39% of the 512MB, with an average CPU of less than 0.1% . I basically been offering acquaintances to host under me if they just simply need a more reliable up time and somewhat of a 'managed' hosting, otherwise I send them over to zensix.com for shared hosting.

Thanks alot guys, this has been a huge help. Looks like I'll stick with a vps for a while then.

For webhosting Managed Hosting Solutions | NETRACKservers out of Canada is great, and the support is great. $119.00/month for a dedicated server with 1 SATA Hard drive, and 1 GBs of Memory, and Core 2 Duo 2.53GHz processor. (+ $19/month for additional GB of Memory)

Actually, the best thing is to ask a support unit:)
the support team at hosting company I am hosted by asked me about how much visitors I am expecting, what type of scripts I will be using and so on.. and then made a custom offer to me;)

first thing is to make sure you know how to configure and manage a server. if you don't then have someone or some server management company do the job.

Never pay the advertised prices at Softlayer.

You can get massive discounts when you barter with the sales team.

true, the same for 3fn.net dedicated servers. However, i was told that they used to make better proposals with better parameters than make discounts.

they have
Platinum monitoring plan (all services + monthly security audit)for $150 this is not such a big price if they really help to install and configure everything.

If you're just getting into dedicated hosting, I'd either go with a fully managed server or for at a minimum, a server with cPanel/WHM. That way at a minimum, you can self manage many aspects of the server.

You don't need a Dedi or a VPS starting out. Get a shared hosting plan, learn it, then eventually move to a VPS. Not worth the money now. Shared hosting is anywhere from $5-$25 a month.....all you need.
