I had lost my appetite for candy decades ago. This morning, I stumbled across this...

Sugar and Spice - The Atlantic (October 2009)

I'm on a mission to find candies using real sugar and natural flavors. I could google them, but candy is not like acai; I cannot simply trust any lander I see.

Can you offer a recommendation?

Good luck with that the world has killed anything that was natural at one point. So even if you find a old time candy that used to use sugar I doubt they are anymore. Same shit happened to Coke, during WWII all the sugar was sent out to the troops and everything using sugar switched over to corn syrup.

Best bet will be imported candy from Canada, Uk etc, to find a new health food store that makes it or make it your self.

I only looked at about 3 of the results for you. This one might warrant further investigation.

I can't see how HFCS is any worse than sugar. Aren't they both metabolized the same? I think the big problem these days is people eat too much sugar without even knowing it. I mean, even read the label on a jar of Hunts spaghetti sauce. It's crazy.

Horse pop is all natural.

I feel ignorant. I have no idea what this is (even after googling it).

I'd be up for importing it if I can't find anything local or within the U.S. Other countries have great candy. A friend in the UK shipped a box of chocolate to me a few years ago. My heart nearly stopped, though I would have croaked with a smile on my face.

Thanks for googling it, Midas Touch. I'm hoping to get a few personal recommendations. If you have any, I'm all ears.

I'm not sure how either are metabolized. Nor am I informed on the health impacts of sugar versus corn syrup. I ate "real sugar" candy several years ago (at least, my friend claimed it was real sugar) and I was blown away. It tasted better.

I can't put my finger on the difference. Kinda like porn. I can't define it, but I know it when I see it.

Trader Joes has all sorts of candies made with real sugar. Soda's too.

Thanks, mreed. I have a Trader Joes near me. I'll check 'em out. If you have a favorite from TJs, do point me to it.

Incidentally, I just googled "real sugar candy" (no quotes). This thread is at #3 in my datacenter for 213,000,000 results. I don't have the history turned on or toolbar installed. So, your suggestions will end up helping the world.

Fructose and High Fructose are different critters.

It seems that there are two camps on this.

"Some people say that HFCS is nutritionally the same as sugar, while others believe that it’s pure evil. In fact, some say that our bodies break HFCS down in a way that stokes our appetites and leads us to eat too much. Could this be true? In this second installment of a 5-part series, we investigate whether HFCS makes us feel hungrier. Here’s what we discovered:................"

I got you beat. I can't plant something without it dying and I can't cook anything without making it taste like giraffe shit. So there.

It's somewhat disturbing that you have Giraffe Shit in you taste bud's memory banks, so even though I really am curious as to how this came about, I won't ask. Lulz

Have you tried the high end candy shops in your area? I haven't looked, but is Godiva or fudge made in a confectioner's shop made using real sugar? I can't imagine the local bakery making yummy chocolate treats using a bunch of chemical in the backroom. Since you can't cook it yourself, look to see who is skilled at making "real" candy and treats locally. Small bakeries, family-owned restaurants and individuals (like cake ladies and such) might have some specialty items. Try the yellow pages for local bakeries and confectionery shops and just talk to the baker about ingredients.
