I'm thinking of buying a new computer lately and ehm i'm in a bit of dilemma, i don't know either buy one already made or get the parts and build it myself . I selected some parts -> "V3" - Wishlist la PC Garage , getting this parts would result a pretty nice computer ooor get an already made one, i'm thinking of a dell precision t5400 ( "T5400" - Wishlist la PC Garage ) .

What do you guys think ?

Thanks

Let me tell ya a little about the deals out there right now ...

Just picked up my newest comp about 2 weeks (maybe 3) ago at Best Buy ... 1100 out the door for ...

12:32 @Contempt • (CPU1) Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU Q9300 @ 2.50GHz @ 2498MHz (Gateway G33M05G1 mainboard) (RAM) 6GB, 3.49GB free (HDDs) 1.17TB, 752GB free
12:32 @Contempt • (VGA1) NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT (512MB), 1680x1050x32, 60Hz (OS) Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium (SP1), 1w 4d 18h 3m 46s uptime, 1w 4d 18h 3m 46s uptime record

:) The HD's aren't stock, but 600 GB internal with 2 300 externals.

Edit: It's the Gateway FX series.

I think you shouldn't sweat names. Build your ideal computer at a variety of places that allow customization, take the cheapest.
Here's a hint: They all use the same parts.

You're right there, and yah they all use almost the same parts, the advantage i see on the Dell is the motherboard which supports 2 cpus , 2 pci x16 2.0, 32gb ram and few other stuff which i couldn't find .

do you play game? if not, you don't need all those fast cpu/video card

i use my eee pc, hook up w/ wireless mouse & keyboard and external monitor. It run as smooth as other computer (for browsing web and word processing) and use much less power

I know what you're saying , but i got a 24" display and my laptop's graphic card isn't powerful enough to run it at 1920 x 1200 and looks like crap, that's why i need a bit of power in the graphic card. And no i don't play games on the pc.

get a quiet case with a quiet PSU such as the antec sonata 3, you wont regret it..

I read on silentpcreview.com | Everything about Silent / Quiet Computers that sonata 3 is something you wish to stay away from, they say antec p182 is much more better . Also the PSU is top notch ( Modu82+ 625 Power Supply: Enermax to the Forefront | silentpcreview.com ) . So from this point of view the computer will be very silent :).

Btw i placed an order on the parts after all ... thanks for all your replies :).

my new machine has this case. i really dig the design of it but don't find it all that quiet. i had a five year old full tower antec running next to it and the difference in fan noise between the two boxes was not that big of a deal considering all antec's silent pc marketing hype.

I'd buy a Dell Vostro 400 with the following:

Quad core @ whatever you can afford
4 G Ram
2x 500G HDD's
2x dual head DVI vid cards, the most RAM you can afford on each. (Nothing like two 19s and two 20s to make your day productive)
Dual gigabit nics
Ubuntu 6 (64-bit) or XP

Shouldn't cost more than $1100 and you'll have a 3 year warranty if you order through the small business sales line.

This system should last you at least 4-5 years easily. Building it yourself is fine and dandy but the reality is you should be costing this box over the next 3 years, so having a warranty, especially from Dell Small Business, is a great way not to spend money on replacement parts. I have yet to be told NO to when literally telling the Dell rep that something was broken and needs to be replaced.

I ended up with this parts :

Antec Tower P182
2 x Western Digital Caviar GP 750GB, SATA, 16MB
1 x Western Digital Caviar RE 320GB
2 x Kingston DDR3, 1333MHz, 1GB
Asus 8800GT-TOP 512MB
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300
Asus P5E3-Premium/WiFi-AP
Enermax MODU82+ 625W
Noctua NH-C12P
Vista Ultimate

Costs ~$2500 here but should worth it ... they arrive on thursday yay :) .

When my comp is just idling all the fans slow down and its nearly silent. Beefier comps will need more cooling power and will obviously be louder at idle.
