I remember my sister's boyfriend bringing over 5 Doom 2 hard disks and installing it on my computer. Fuck that got my hooked big time. I remember using a few doom 2 level editors (WAD) files to make levels, and got into making custom monsters/characters. That's the first taste of "development" I had as a teen.

That was the start of the modding community (I think at least, with Doom). Now the modding community has been killed by the major titles unfortunately.

Oh well, I'll get this out of nostalgia.

I recall having to reboot to launch the game as we didn't have enough RAM back then to play, lol.

I thought that was the norm? :D

I was optimizing the shit out of autoexec.bat to get some more memory for everything. Then you always had a bit different configuration for different games. Plus if my memory serves right, I think I had EGA display card when original Doom came out so I had to go to my friend's place to play it because EGA was only 16 colors and Doom had AMAZING VGA graphics. And I even downloaded Doom from BBS with 33.6k modem the day the shareware demo came out. Damn, I kinda miss those days. Now we have 1 billion colors, two 32" displays and 32GB of RAM, and still shit don't run properly half the time ;)

Yup, I remember those days with Doom and Wolfenstein, huddled around a screen with mates, enthralled and stoned at the same time.

Things have come a long way since then!

and this is why the next generation of geeks wont know shit. Back in the day it took hours to figure out how to get a game working. You had to explore the file system, write basic scripts, ect.

The next generation of geeks will just simply have to "swipe" a finger.

They better have cheat codes again, walk through wall till you go to the end of the map then it gets all crazy.

or god mode, happy ammo... oh the memories. and the bfg

I'm not old enough for this I don't think, but I get mad warm nostalgia from CS 1.6 and Halo gaming memories. It's funny, I'm only 22 and haven't played a computer game in probably 4 years but I used to spend 6-12 hours a day on games in my teens and I don't regret it at all, some of the best memories playing competitive clan games on Ventrilo.

People from an older generation must find it so pathetic but they don't know what they're (were) missing!

Some of the first computer games I played, save for Solitaire, were Doom, Wolfenstein and Duke Nukem. Very fond memories. Much time well wasted.

Man, I got my start modding Half-Life. I used QuArK more than anything, and used it for Doom, Quake, ET, and so on.

Nice to know I'm not the only one who started out like that, but also a shame to think that DOOM no longer has anyone who was involved in the original 3.

Back in the day...

1. Had brief email exchange with iD Software's Dave Taylor
2. Got a couple of sweet Deathmatch tips used by the iD boys
3. Used tips & skillz to rule local Doom ladder and computer store LAN competitions
4. Profit (from multiple DOOM II T-shirt prize wins)

Loved that game and hoping for the best with this new DOOM.

I just finished Wolfenstein, now I'm ready for Doom. Shit... it must be 1993... I had better go register a bunch of domains.
