New Laptop Buying Help: Lenovo Y510p or U430?

The main thing that I hate about Lenovo is the fucking extra key (bottom left) where Cntrl usually is on every other keyboard in the world...fucking annoying.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhh yes. I didn't buy one but that was a big factor when I was looking. Could probably remap the key, or use autohokey. But yeah that shit drives me nuts, wtf does "Fn" even do? Function?

Y510p - shitty trackpad, heat issues, super heavy/bulky, plastic/bends/twists.

U430 - weak, nothing special.

Get either one of these:

Both have pros and cons but they're about as good as laptops get for that much monies.

Both have great screens. Dell has amazing battery life. Both run programs like beasts. Some dell models come with SSHD drives. Dell has a better trackpad. Dell might have some wifi issues which I think can be fixed by updating wifi card drivers.

^^ (couldn't) EDIT: or get this: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/VIZIO-CN15-A5-15-6-Inch-Laptop/dp/B009PJHD3Y/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top]Amazon.com : VIZIO CN15-A5 15.6-Inch Laptop : Laptop Computers : Computers & Accessories[/ame] (really fast, nice screen, well built).

I really hate that too, but it is only on the Lenovo Thinkpad series, not the others.

The y510 mentioned above is an Ideapad with a "normal" keyboard layout.

The y510p says +24 gig ssd? Is that large enough for the operating sys?

the 24GB SSD is used as a cache for the 1TB HDD. You wont be able to access the SSD directly or separately (well, not without reconfiguring). The SSD will learn which parts of the HDD you use the most and will cache them. It will make a big difference over the other laptop. I wouldn't even consider using a laptop/pc/whatever without an SSD, it's really a horrible experience after having had an SSD based system for several years.

Yep, even a 8gb SSD cache makes a massive difference. Pretty much every new "gaming" laptop has one since most gamers want/need loads of storage and demand SSD speed as well heh.

Guess what, I succumbed to all that macfag propaganda a couple months ago and bought the latest macbook pro, after a week I gave it away and bought myself a beastly powerhouse of a 17" asus laptop. Fuck Apple and their shitty computers.

jokes on you, now you can't work for equity coding ruby

I had the same problem when I was planning to buy a new lappy. It is a really tough job as there are so many options available in front of you to select from and there you have certain criteria for it: Limited budget, Features, Design, Brand, Usability and Purpose of using. I refer to my friends' feedback and some websites before buying it. But, at recent I'm writing reviews on laptops and cell phones. You can check here, and if you need any kind of information you can always shoot me a PM.

My computer is busted and I'm looking for a laptop. I was wondering if anyone has an all-in-one computer?

27" screen seems nice, with i7 cpu, Nvidia gpu, 16gb ram...seems decent compared with a laptop for $1k-$1500?

I dunno, kind of defeats the point of a laptop - might as well just get a desktop, which'll be cheaper and more upgradeable.

Don't just look at the brand name of the GPU, that's irrelevant. There are plenty of AMD GPUs that are better than Nvidia ones.

I'd scout ebay, that's where I get all my laptops. I picked up an HP envy, which is a beauty of a laptop (good quality screen, well built, looks good, decent illuminated keyboard), with a 17.3" full HD 3d screen, 640GB HDD, 8 GB ram, i7 Q720, AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5800, and Win7 Home premium - back in April for £600. It's quite hard to find good GPUs in laptops, and I paid more for that. If you don't care about gaming, or only want to play CS etc, then you could probably get one of similar specs for half the price.

I don't know if you can get it where you are but try to find Lenovo g580H if you are really a cheap prick. It's Celeron Dual Core 1005M 2x1.9 GHz,
8 GB DDR3, 500 GB SATA 5400. It costs around $350 without the operating system. If it's for IM stuff only (scrapers, some GSA and things like that) it's more than enough. The biggest advantage is it's speed and silence. You can have it even in your bedroom and your girlfriend won't kick you out with it because it gives virtually no noise at all. I'm running it almost 24/7 and it's just working fine. WiFi is great also. It gets warm when when doing stuff with PS but besides that it keeps normal temperature. One thing, if you get something with Win8 delete that thing and downgrade to Win7. Cheap thing that does the job done. Of course, it won't replace a proper desktop.
