New Monitor - Sort of Disappointed

Alright so I bought a monitor today, it's a 23" Asus, 1980x1080 resolution, 1ms response time, but I got it home and started to use it, within about five minutes I knew something was wrong because my eyes started to hurt and felt strained and my head started to ache. One little vital piece of information I forgot to make sure of was the refresh rate, which at its native resolution is maxed out at 60 hertz.

I'm able to sacrifice my resolution for 75 hertz, unfortunately it looks pretty choppy this way. It's not only the quality I have a problem with, it also gives me less room to work with on my screen, which is the whole reason I got a new monitor. So my question is this, what resolution are you guys running at, if any of you have 60 hertz monitors I'd like to hear what your experience is with eye strain and headaches (I might just be sensitive because I'm not used to it yet). Also monitor recommendations in general, what's a good monitor with 75+ hertz that runs in its native resolution (1980x1080, preferably 23"). If you recommend a good one I might just take this back and pay extra for a more comfortable experience (by might I mean if I hear people aren't able to become comfortable with 60 hertz). Would really appreciate your guys' feedback on this.

If you want to improve your work output you should look into a multi monitor setup. I feel almost crippled when I have to work off my laptop.

I'm fine with 60 hertz but I'm old. Give it another day or so then take it back if it isn't working out.

I would LOVE to have a multi monitor setup, unfortunately my desk doesn't provide a sufficient amount of space. The next investment I need to make is in a new computer desk with lots of room.

Also I know that feel man, my last monitor was a 17" and it was extremely annoying having to write an article and reference a webpage or learn coding and have to glance back at the book by alt tabbing back and forth. Which is why it was urgent I get this, now I have a lot more room to work with which is nice.

It's also really good to hear you're comfortable with 60 hertz, and I don't think it's just because you're old. What's the longest you look at your screen in a day? Do you find your eyes feel strained by the end of the day?
I used to have the same problem with CRT's, anything below 75 would give me headache, but for some reason I'm ok with 60 hertz LCD's. As Marc said above, just try it for a while.

Edit, also you sure it's 1980 not 1920?
Ah that's comforting to hear as well, this screen is an LCD, do you currently run 75 hertz or 60?

Also yeah I meant 1920, my bad.

@Edit2: Do all monitors even support that sort of customization? I don't want to fuck my monitor up lmfao

60hz LCD should be fine. It's what almost all mainstream and even high end monitors run at. More importantly, what kind of cable have you got running from the video card to the monitor?

Well from the monitor to the computer is a VGA cable, but the actual connection is made through a DVI adapter. From what I can tell it doesn't look bad at all when it's running at the highest resolution, but is it lacking potential being connected this way, like should I also be looking into an alternative means of connection?

I can connect straight through DVI, only reason I used the adapter was because it was already plugged in because of my old monitor, and I didn't think it would make a difference in quality.

It makes a difference. If you have a DVI cable, hook it up, your eyes will most likely stop hurting.

If you don't have one, you can order a cheap one here...

Get some wall mounts. Your desk size doesn't matter then.

xx hours a day. Even when I'm not working I might be watching some videos. Not a problem.

Alright! I just went ahead and hooked it up with a DVI cable instead. Seems to be better so far, I'm on native resolution now at 60 hertz and it's definitely going to take some getting used to it's still sort of uncomfortable, but not as intense as when I was using a VGA. On the up side the DVI noticeably enhanced the quality of the picture so that's good. I guess I'm going to just troop it out and go hard with this monitor instead, everybody seems to be running 60 hertz for the most part. If worst comes to worse I can just follow the guide ShadowCaster hit up and fuck around with my resolution a bit and try to bump it up to 75 hertz, hopefully I can just adapt instead though.

Also fuck that tag lmfao

^^ I was going to suggest turning the brightness right down. I'm running some Dells at 60hz (23" 1920x1080) and minimum brightness setting was required from the start as it was like looking into a series of floodlights.

This can help the eyes too if you use your computer a lot at night...

I've had flux installed for a long time now, great recommendation.

I did this and it actually helped quite a bit...like a lot. It's a lot easier to look at now..I had already turned it down to 50 but now it's down to 30 and it's perfect now.
I knew it :)
Boss status predictions mate. It's looking nice now.

Appreciate everybody for the help and recommendations. I'm positive I'll keep it now. The toned down brightness helped a lot actually, feel retarded for not doing that in the first place, turned down the contrast as well and it's a lot more easy on the eyes. Also everybody I've talked to seems to work with 60 hertz for the most part so meh. We'll see how the workday goes tomorrow, hopefully I don't experience any noticeable irritation or visual fatigue in comparison to my old monitor.

Stoked to have a new monitor though, my old one was trash, only good thing about it was the refresh rate lol
