Next U.S. Bailout: College Students (And Grads)

Paid for my private college tuition in cash cause I saved before college, worked my ass of through college, and didn't get a fucking useless degree. I'll be slightly upset if people get their debts wiped.

Agreed. I'm in the same boat. I don't have a problem with education (I have degrees of my own and use them daily to make a good living). What chaps my hide are people wanting a bail out just b/c jobs aren't there. Running from personal responsibility won't solve your problems. The US government won't solve your problems. You will.

Seems inappropriate to me to forgive student loans. But the masses are stupid so the government will pander to them.

how about we just make a compromise? I'll keep paying on my student loan and stop paying into the scam that is social security. Deal?

When I think bail out I think of giving people money, but maybe the bail out will be getting rid of all of the restrictions the OP quoted. If they did that I'd be for it, because it would force college to drop useless degrees, because they wouldn't be profitable.

Why would I want to hire someone who is 4 years work experience behind someone who didn't go to school?

lol. Tell that to your lawyer. Or doctor. Or engineer. Or architect.

I'd probably click that link and read it if it ended '..plan to fight the department of education'.

or maybe '..plan to pay colleges to change their curriculum'

or maybe '..plan to pay companies to demand more of recent college grads'

or even '..plan to buy Goddard College, ship it to California, put it on a raft and turn it into a casino in international waters'

I think Peter Thiel the hyper-libertarian needs to brush up on his Thoreau.

You ancap types do make me think about who has 'the right ideas'. rep to you both.

The idea that you should tailor your education to future marketability and employment is nonsense.

You live once, if you want to follow a career path, follow it. Fuck all if it pays shit, if that career or line of work is something you enjoy, by all means, pursue it.

The amount the people of the united states pay in taxes is enough to provide free, universal education, protect our borders, provide healthcare to anyone who needs it and opts not to use a private facility, put a colony on mars by 2040, and pay off the deficit in 10 years.

So why aren't these things being done? Priorities. We invade, we sponsor governments across the globe, we wage war, we spend billions telling people what to do, think, and how to act. We pay farms to waste crops, we spend trillions in a known-to-be-futile war on personal choice.

It's time we focus on bring a high base standard of living to America, so that everyone can enjoy it and use it as a platform for reaching new, greater heights.

Wait what. Are some sort of libbrah?

I vote to ban you. Coming into a thread on STS and making sense.

Please read the rules before posting again.

Thanks.

I don't have a lawyer.

I don't have a doctor.

I don't have an engineer.

I don't have an architect.

Most of the early lawyers, doctors, engineers and architects didn't go to schools.

You don't need a degree to get a job, and I am much more interested in hiring someone who didn't get a degree than someone who did get one. Why would I want to hire someone who is 4 years work experience behind someone who didn't go to school?

It's not a climate of fear. Western economies, but worst of all the US economy, are completely backwards. People were encouraged to spend instead of save, and that is a social and political consequence of economic games the government has played since the Depression.

Distorting interest rates is exactly why this mess exists. Higher rates would make people think twice before borrowing and create more incentive for these loans to be paid off or settled quickly.

The interest rate is a the price of savings. When you play with it, you destroy the capital structure of an economy.

All of our economic progress is predicated on having a very strong capital structure. Deprived of capital (savings), economies can and will regress.

Yes, big mess.

I'm going to argue this in the morning when I'm less drunk...brb till tomorrow morning suckas..

You mean the ones who let blood using a hand drill to help 'bad blood' out and away from your brain?

This is true, they rarely attended school.
Doctors have probably killed more people than they have saved.

I repeat, I don't have a doctor.

Wise words indeed.

Now, show of hands people... Who else here thought it was ironic that the only widely-known politician who is campaigning to bring about these changes is the countries' #1 Libertarian?

I'm looking for new call center space right now... I can't wait for the next wave of hungry, commission only salespeople to be sent in from the farm... Err, I mean I'm going to be hiring recent college grads thanks to Obama's latest initiative.

[seriously though, high unemployment is awesome for people who own call centers]
