No content sites beating me on google

I recently have put a site with little competition. Most of the other sites on the first page Google results have not little no content yet they still manage to rank higher then my site which has a steady stream of content. One of the sites that's beating me on Google's results is a completely default Wordpress page with absolutely no content. We both have the same domain name (.com/.net) which pertains to the keyword.

So, to say the least I am fairly confused, the "competitors" site isn't much older then mine either while my site struggles between the bottom of page one and into page 2 sporadically.

The only thing I can think of personally that could be doing this is the fact that I have removed the blog name and tagline and replaced it with my own header image, yet it still doesn't make that much sense considering I'm optimizing for keyword density and the keyword is my site name. I'm also using SEO optimizing tools and have completely original content.

So my question is this, what exactly determines google rank? I always thought it was original content, reciprocal links among other things, but this leads me to believe that there is something vital is missing or I simply have some misinformation of how Google really works.

The site is here, for the keywords "Priest PvP". It isn't much, but the content alone should presumably let me top my competitors in this case.

Thanks in advance for any help or guidance anyone has to offer.

Any Links I dont see any with Seo Quake.
No Header No Meta.
Have you installed All in One Seo or Platinum Seo and configured it on your blog
Your article Urls are like this http://priestpvp.net/?p=73
Go Into Permalink settings and change it to more Seo Friendly Urls

To be blunt and take this with a grain of salt as I am new also. I see no effort on either Onpage Seo or Off Page

Thanks for the quick response,

Yes I have installed All in One Seo, and I have configured it, so I'm not sure whats wrong there.

Thanks for letting me know about the Seo Friendly URLs, this is one of my first WP sites and I was unaware of these options, kicking myself a little bit now though.

How old is your domain? You'll get juggled for the first few months or so.

But the main issue here is your lack of links.

Get some.

Alright, I'll start working on those asap. I just figured there might be a deeper problem when I'm getting crawled, but out ranked by a content-less site.

Quick update for today; I'm now down to page 2, #10. The irony here is that I was working on links last night, and fixed a bunch of stuff with the site. My meta description still isn't updated, something that I've changed about a week ago.

Just gonna lode up some content for the site and wait it out now, start up some other projects and see if they go any smoother.

I just checked your site, it look nice. I would advise you to shorten your description, I think it's just too long.
The search engines will only show 1-2 sentences of your description, and I read somewhere that a shorter description is better for seo.

I would also not recommend you to display your site and targeted keywords on forums, but feel free to do as you wish.

Good luck :)

Before my description was to short in my own opinion, but I could look over it again.

This is merely a site to help me get set up to start mass producing niche sites, I'm not even sure if I'm going to put ads up on this, and by putting my site here, the keyword is right there in your face anyways, and I wouldn't be able to get any help without posting the site. And to be quite frank, the # of searches a month was grossly inflated, the impressions are very low, and the ability to advertise in this niche is little to none. Thanks for your concerns though.

Backlinks, Backlinks, Backlinks. Backlinks are the single biggest factor in determining rankings and nothing you do onsite even comes close.

Anyone knows what kind of video player that warcraft vids site is using?

OP, open the comments on your site and enable akismet. Make the header link to home. In your tags put "Wow" and warcraft. Trying to rank for "priest" is like trying to start your own religion. Ranking for "wow priest pvp" is more like it. On the spec posts, add a text link to the talent calculator (cant remember what its called).
A more general tip is to make linkbait. Make an absurd, stupid or plain crazy spec and beat the shit out of the noobs. You are obviously skilled so it will be easy to beat people with stupid methods/spells. Fraps it, upload it and try to make it viral, with a title like "OMG check out that priest bashing heads with lvl 2 spells"

Look for affiliate offer on WoW guides you will find a few

Unfortunately most of them don't match up to my sites more specific niche. I'm not saying down the road I wont throw up a few ads on this site, just not for awhile.

I highly doubt a site with zero content, using all of the default wordpress settings has tons, if any backlinks, yet it's still out ranking me.

Being able to rank for WoW and warcraft would be little to nil, if that's a strategy that goes along with adding my main keyword I could understand using it, but it seems a little odd to be using such a broad keyword that I will never rank for. The keyword I am ranking for is "Priest PvP", not "Priest", this is relatively unused keyword, the .org and .com are both dead sites, and most of Google's rankings for this keyword are assortment of shit. I'm 10th for "Priest PvP", "WoW Priest PvP" would get me less impressions, and would void my domain name, to some extent.

I do add links to the talent calculators, along with an image.

"You are obviously skilled etc", Those videos and specs are from some of the top playing priests in the game, my mains a priest but this does not mean I am in any way a great player. I merely enjoy the class and enjoy finding related info. I'm not really looking to go viral or do much with this site, as stated before it's a site I'm just using to learn the ropes, and figure out this unusual problem of being outranked by content-less sites.

I think by answering to the site itself, and the game it pertains to is missing the point of this thread a little. I'm just looking at it through more of a SEO perspective by attempting to work on keyword density among other things.

Thanks for the responses.

Actually, scratch that about being 10th, I'm now on the 3rd page.

Fairly disheartening are you guys sure there is no blatantly obvious mistakes or things that could be effecting how Google crawls my site? I seem to be getting no crawl errors or anything to that effect from Google...

Seo is a black box, it is not a process where you flip a switch, add something and voila you rank. You just do some simple stuff to help ranking and hope you rank. There are usually no "blatanly obvious mistakes" nor things that affect your site. Your site is just new, it will hop up and down for months.

You missed the point. You're thinking about this all wrong. I wasn't talking about this particular site that you're trying to beat. I was talking about what you need to do to improve your ranking. Onsite SEO is relatively unimportant compared to offisite. Your post led me to believe you have no understanding of this. You didn't mention backlinks at all. Backlinks are much, much, much, much, much more important than anything you can do onsite to improve your rankings. It's tedious. It's boring. It takes work. But if you want to improve rankings, backlinks are what you need to be thinking about.

But, yes, a nothing site could easily have more backlinks. All the owner needs is access to Xrumer or some other decent backlink tool.

Couple things.

1) You haven't been crawled since June 3rd so that is why you're slipping in rankings Priest PvP

AKA Google has not seen a single change you've made since June 3rd.

SEO is a slow process and you need to give your newer less crawled sites longer for your changes to 'kick in'

How do you get google to crawl you more often?

  • Post more content- Google wants to have the latest and greatest fresh content

  • Get more links - If Google finds you site via another site you get crawled again

  • Social media - Use twitter to your advantage. Google is CONSTANTLY crawling the social media sites for the fresh content. So... when you post. Make a twitter post, facebook etc.
2) It looks like you've OVER - optimized for 'Priest PVP' expand this a bit.

Hmm.. that was my first idea as well - optimization run over and into the ground.

Here, for example is the permanent URL for your first entry:

priestpvp.net/priest-pvp-videos/priest-pvp-video-heastost-2/

holy shit!

Think of the usual .2 -4% keyword density and lighten your grip on those keywords a bit.

Alright, just making sure I'm not fucking something up completely.

Alright, thanks for the input. I've done a little bit of social bookmarking but that's obviously not going to cut it even in a low competition keyword.

I also decided to do some back-link checking of the content-less site, 0 backlinks.

I've made a few posts since then, and like I said before some social bookmarking along with some high ranked directories, but I'll expand to social networking sites, at least for future reference when I'm doing my main sites.

Alright, iI haven't really heard that term thrown around before so I'll definatly keep that in mind and change a few things around.

Thanks for the feedback and help everyone. I have a much better grasp on the concept of SEO now.

I'm learning real fast reading and doing are two very, very, different things.

.com domain placeholder...gotta love that shit lol.

To those who say only links matter check out this Google search for Carpet Cleaning, and take note of atlantacarpetcleaning.com.

Tell me that's not a case where on-page optimization is beating the competitors links.

Thats a pretty clear case of Google loving the keyword in the url, and the no hyphen dot com version.

1 Link LOL

Looks like a SEO Company did it and is selling the leads or sold the site. Seems pretty heavy with the keyword at the bottom of the page. Interesting.

You are kinda outting someones page......
