Obama told the FFC the Internet should be reclassified as a utility. President Obama is backing Net Neutrality!

"Obamacare for the internet." - Ted Cruz

Thank god we have Senators like Ted Cruz taking to twitter:

"Net Neutrality" is Obamacare for the Internet; the Internet should not operate at the speed of government.

See the damning video footage where Obama declares war on the internet! The footage will shock you!

"Cable companies 'stunned' by Obama's 'extreme' net neutrality proposals"

The president’s move has set the stage for a political showdown in Washington where the cable industry has been left looking flat-footed by a vocal and well- organised grass roots opposition.

[..]

The split is likely to be one of the key battlegrounds after Obama’s midterm election defeats. Mitch McConnell, who will become majority leader in the Senate when the Republicans take control in January, urged the FCC to reject Obama’s comments, saying it amounted to “heavy-handed regulation that will stifle innovation”.

Obamacare for the Internet will destroy America as we know it...

It doesn't matter, as long as Mitch McConnell can still sell cocaine on Silk Road 2.0.

Silk road 2.0 got hacked??? $2.7 mill in bitcoins stolen, Defcon arrested and site seized by FBI. Apart from that, all is well.

Two greedy bloated systems trying to grab power, one overly litigious and one on a feeding frenzy for money. Sucks that either is about to get their dicks in.

If it's got to happen I'd rather have the gub'ment making slow misguided decisions than Time Warner going full retard on the landscape of the net.

You can tell Obama gives zero fucks, dude looks dead inside.

It won't happen. Big brands like Verizon are going to fight this hard.

The last thing we need is the .gov to 'write down' anything about the Internet. Nothing. No laws, rules, or regulations. Stay the fuck away. Don't decide anything. Don't do anything.

Ive noticed many politicians eyes go blood shot before giving speeches. I think they dope up heavily or get drunk before appearing in public.

Stop covering for Obama. Everyone knows he is the devil.

Well, moving the Internet under FCC supervisions would give us a nice 16.1% tax increase on Internet services PLUS give them the right to outlaw content with which they don't agree with. Ban the F word? DONE Ban gay webmasters? Nope - not politically correct!

Maybe I'm missing the intended sarcasm in some of these posts, but net neutrality is a good thing and without governments putting in rules to support it, ISP's will certainly eliminate net neutrality as soon as they can.

The market will always sort out any problems. The second the government puts something on paper the market no longer has control. You think the average user is going to benefit from government intervention?

No, not when theres a virtual monopoly on cable and internet providers in the area, which is the case in most places. Or when collusion with the competition becomes more profitable than competing with each other.

You guys should do this as a podcast.

government evil. No government awesome #274: random pretentious topic of the week

That is true for some things and not true for others. One example of the benefit of government intervention in communication, though admittedly an old one, is the regulation of the spectrum so that radio, tv, mobile devices, etc. don't clobber each other.

The average user will certainly benefit from government enforced net neutrality. Without it, ISPs/major carriers will inevitably start leaning on higher activity sites for payments to avoid being throttled. I say inevitably because they're the only ones grumbling about existing net neutrality and the only ones suggesting these types of charges.

Sites like Netflix, Hulu, and other popular high bandwidth sites would have to fork out funds to multiple ISPs/carriers just to keep their sites running quickly. Netflix, etc. will not just eat these charges, they'll pass them along to consumers. So prices will go up, and the only ones benefiting from this will be the ISPs/carriers.

Since this will more or less be a charge hidden to consumers, adoption rate by the ISPs/carriers will be high and quick, as soon as the first one does it.

Government intervention sucks in a lot of situations, but I don't think this is one of them.
