OBESITY IS A DISEASE?

One reason in favor, it said, was that it would reduce the stigma of obesity that stems from the widespread perception that it is simply the result of eating too much or exercising too little.

wow

Some doctors say that people do not have full control over their weight.

lol

Tumbl this. - YouTube

Supporters of the disease classification also say it fits some medical criteria of a disease, such as impairing body function.

So basically, it fits a couple of the criteria of a disease, and it'll make fatasses feel better ("you can't make fun of me - I have a disease!"), so let's just go ahead and call it a disease!

I'll be curious to see what sort of impact this has. inb4 Wall-E

it's a mental disease(condition being a better word) IMO. If you are so overweighted that you are physically impaired, then you have mental issues, i.e. self control issues, self harm/sabotage tendencies, which may have a multitude of causes.

If addiction is a disease then so is this. But hey, I don't think addiction is a disease so I guess this post isn't worth much.

I'm a fat bastard and, although I may be crazy, I'm fully aware that my "condition" is a result of eating too much, drinking too much, and exercising too little. It's not complicated, I'm a lazy fuck.

This is the same for 99.9% of fat people out there. The other 0.01% have a serious health problem, be it physical or mental, that they need to seek help for.

I edited.

Also you have to look at the socio-cultural perspective. It's a very widespread issue and people(society) needs to address it. Not only it's not healthy to be fat, but it's not normal for the species itself, the gene pool, etc. Self-indulgence is increasingly popular philosophy among every western society, which I find disgusting. You are supposed not to sit and just enjoy (perceived)luxury, but create something and pass it on to the next generation. You don't have to be a scientist, political leader or somebody massively famous. Teaching your children what is wrong and right, how to live a happy life, to have critical thinking and other small, but very important things in life, is sufficient enough IMO.

oh wow... how did I get into this, while commenting about McDonalds...

bottom line: it's spreading like wild fire, because of the direction our society is going. Maybe we can't direct our philosophy very well, but we can dictate what our bodies do. And who knows... "Mens sana in corpore sano" might prove itself to be true :)

Next thing you know people who cant read, write, rank sites and do basic math will have a disease too....

It's OK, since I made my comments I've been sitting here thinking to myself that if anorexia and bulimia are mental conditions then why not the opposite?

I wonder if I can get some gov't assistance for my disability? Maybe some food stamps.

The thing is food companys engineer their food so people crave it, so the deck isnt even stacked even anymore.

I can't tell if you are being sarcastic, but basically - yes. I believe them to be roughly the same problems. Self-harm, induced by personal problems, inspired by the current tendency in society.

The difference is that for some reason, obesity is not as gross in the eyes of society, as anorexia, which is very wrong IMO. This has helped a huge problem creep its way into the life of millions of people. People like that keep feeding(pun abs. intended) their need for self-harm, because society does not have an adverse reaction to it, most probably out of politeness.

That is why I think it is a condition, not a disease. A condition is just a mere effect. Not the cause.

First off, a lot of people don't understand what the definition of disease really means, obviously.

Also, clearly very few of you understand what genetics are, body types, or how "obesity" is measured. Has anyone in this thread taken a physiology class?

Sure, there's a lot of fat people out there who don't care, or they do but they're lazy. But thyroid or pituitary issues are not the only "legitimate" causes for being fat. There are a lot of athletes in this world that eat fairly healthy (healthier than USDA recommendations) and work their asses off on a daily basis, yet they still have issues with losing fat, and the endocrine system is not always at fault, nor is laziness (obviously).

Obesity is measured through BMI, which is literally just a guesstimate. What's funny is that most of the people who claim obesity is due to laziness and bad eating choices are usually skinny. Being "skinny" is no healthier than being obese. The skeletal system requires a healthy level of muscle for the human movement system to operate, and many "skinny" people make eating choices that are just as bad as obese people, and many are just as "lazy," as you say.

Severe obesity leads to other serious issues, which is clearly a disease to begin with. Sure, the majority of those people made bad choices to get where they're at, but so did/do a lot of people with cancer, heart disease, etc. But trying to generalize a "special population" based upon your ignorance doesn't mean it's backed by science.
