oDesk

GAF, now freelancer.com has been great for me.

If you're looking for link building/social bookmarking/grunt workers then drop me a PM - have a great group of guys in sri lanka that I and a couple partners have worked with for over a year.

seriously - if you have a beef with ODesk you are just DOING IT WRONG.

Actually I'm not, I give the same req docs to RAC guys and they get it right. The difference is I pay $7/hour on odesk and $18/hour on RAC, so yea, I'm probably hitting the bottom barrel at odesk.

But honestly dude, unless it's stupid simple coding/design, you're not going to get great results on odesk unless you find a few diamonds.

Truth == only get 100+ hour workers, that was one of my biggest failures, giving new guys a chance on odesk.

Thats been my experience as well - I don't hire anyone without a already proven track record. I struck gold with one guy I took a chance on but got burned a couple other times before figuring that out.

I have 5 individuals on odesk, each working for me 50-70 hours a week. As long as you are specific with your directions these guys get work done and get it done right. I don't pay any one of these individuals more than $3.40 and hour. oDesk wins time and time again.

If you really want quality - Elance, ok maybe Guru too. All the rest are total BS (yes, Odesk, Scriptlance, RAC (BIGGEST SHIT for coders based on barbarian rules of arbitration, 15%+ fees, and shady ways of payment), GAF (second one shit)) but if you are looking to data entry etc. similar jobs with people who speak like Sumit (which is probably true based on $3/hour rate) - they are way to go.

P.S. I am not an American but when I freelanced a lot I wasn't work for less than $10/hour too. Why would I work for some broke ass affiliate webmaster for $3-4/hour when I can simply get local job with benefits for same or higher rate from western-based company in my town. And such companies are probably in Philipinos/India/Pakistan as well, so I am just assuming people who are hanging out on such sites for $3/hour out of their mind and crappy workers or will not do it forever, but it's their business.

I've been working off of referrals for the past year but it's starting to dry up. I think more people are looking for cost over quality now. I actually lost one of my retainer clients from Atlanta to someone in India about a week ago.

So I joined oDesk a few weeks ago as a Freelance Programmer. I haven't had time to build up my profile yet; wasn't really considering finishing it until now. It appears that WF members are more likely to hire off of there then on here.

I just get so many quote request for people wanting 40-60 hours jobs for $100-$300 that I figured oDesk's competitiveness would cause the same time wasting clients.

If I wanted to make $300/week I'd work at McDonalds. At least I'd get free lunch.

jgrim, if you want to make money, at least some decent - Elance way to go. You will get money there, just look at the fact there are lot of americans as coders hanging out on freelance, even some middle size firms from time to time.
