A few weeks ago I saw someone else post about getting an office space.

For the last 3 years I'd been working out of home.

And at a certain point it becomes harder and harder to draw the line between 'work' and 'home'.

Which turns both into neither.

So about 2 weeks ago, I got a shared office space, and goddam bros, worth every penny.

Anyone who hasn't done this yet, seriously look into it, at the least get yourself a room seperate from the rest of world, where you just do one thing ... work.

(EDIT: Maybe not too separate, cause remember, chronic masturbation decreases productivity.)

Everything about the new set up is easier.

Instead of coming in, spending 8-10 hours at home 'working'. It's much more productive & practical to go to 'work' spend 4-6 hours, and go live the rest of your day in peace.

Internet marketing is cool, but only if it's a means to something greater. There's nothing balanced or cool about sitting at home, on a screen all day, even if you are banking hard.

For the investment of 400 per month, I've made myself (and my partner) infinitely more happy. We come in eager to work, and leave able to enjoy whatever the fuck we decide to do.

Maybe some other people who separated their home from work can pitch in as well ... I can't imagine anyone who's tried it would go back, unless there was some exceptional circumstance.

So if you have the money, stop being a broke ass in your moms basement, get an office, put on a suit and work for yourself ;)

Made a huge change to my productivity moving into an office. Wouldn't go back to working from home. Too easy to not get dressed, not get into a working mindset, do other things, etc when you're at home.

Bed room is for sleeping.
Office is for working.

Never do any other activity in either of those places (unless you're not a forever alone gay webmaster, in which case sex in the bed room is also acceptable).
 
I approve of this post, looking into sharing an office myself. It's a great idea to separate home and work. Easier to hit the gym after work too since you're already out. When at home I rarely want to get dressed just to go to the gym..
 
I love having my office. The only thing that is hard is the evenings when I want to do some work, but want to use my desktop and not my laptop. With kids, leaving to go to the office at night can be tough.
 
Working at home starts to suck the life out of you. Little to no human interaction, sitting in your boxers, lawns being mowed, neighbors dogs barking....

Too many things to break your focus.

In all seriousness though, I've been thinking about getting office space down here in Pacific Beach for a while now. I'd even entertain the idea of sharing space with a few WF peeps in the area so long as we all can work in close proximity without resorting to old fashioned dueling to solve disputes.

Ping me if you're in the PB/MB/La Jolla area and want to explore getting a spot together.
 
I can't wait until I have the money to rent out office space.

Working from home is not the ideal solution unless you at least have a 2nd bedroom or an office to work out of and have people to talk to on a regular basis, and even then I'd imagine you'd still feel cooped up.

As for me, I don't have a roommate, wife, or live-in girlfriend, and feel isolated most of the time. Usually I find myself going a day or two without any interaction from others...which can't possibly be healthy. Although I like working in sweat pants and not having to get dressed and drive to an office, I wonder how long this life is sustainable. At some point I need to make a change. Even if I had a girlfriend that comes over after work, I would still want to get the hell out of here because I've been in my apartment all day. The ideal situation for almost everyone is to have some other place to work so you can look forward to coming home every night.

And for God's sake, don't ever work out of your bedroom. I tried this once and my sleeping pattern got so messed up in only a matter of weeks. My mind could never relax once I laid down to sleep because it thought I was still in work mode.

So at the very least, get your computer out of your bedroom.
 
Wait... you want me to bust my ass to escape the 9-5 life, so I can go work in a shared office downtown in some city every day?

Not likely...

Your post isn't about getting an office. Or the productivity some might achieve with it.

It's about an exceptional boy who can work harder than others can from home.

Bravo Matt, bravo.

EDIT: Not as much sarcasm as you might think. I find it exceptional anyone who has the discipline to work from home. And this is coming from someone who tricked himself into thinking that was the case for 3+ years.

No, my point is... why are you doing this? Why did you break away to start your own shop, instead of entering the corporate work force? Why did you make the decision to follow this path in life? It's fuck a lot more volatile, sometimes not as beneficial, many times more hours, and almost all the time more stressful.

For me at least, it was freedom. Signing a 12 month lease on a shared office space I wake up and goto every day would be the total opposite reason as to why I went this direction in life. That's all I meant.

It's the same freedom just with a different approach. Some people might like working from home, but others need that human ineraction or require a physical location with physical employees to scale.

I used to think I wanted to work 100% from home too, but I've started to burn out. I need that physical team that I can work with every day in the office.

What's "work"? Creating value.

Why work? For freedom.

Why freedom? To do what I want.

What do I want? To do nothing. (or have the freedom of choice to).

So you see. Work gets in the way of my freedom. By isolating it into a smaller part of my existence, I achieve my freedom.

WITHOUT affecting my value output, in fact, increasing it ... leading to ... more freedom.

That's why I advocate working from an office.

If you can create more value working from home, sure, why not? Same concept, just different approach.

Work is life. Life is work. You are what you do. They blend together.

I am always "working". I tried to get an office and found that I was wasting valuable work time commuting to work. I could have been working during those 30 minutes.
 
Just because you have an office doesn't mean you should go work a corporate job. That's stupid reasoning.

I don't work a corporate job because there is no upside. I choose to work for myself because I have 100% control over how hard I work and how much money I make. If I was working a corporate job, I would get my salary and a 3% raise every year.

Having office space doesn't erase the upside potential of owning my own company. Working a corporate job does.

As for the office thing, I keep thinking it might be cool to get a space somewhere, hire a few peeps, and start a little agency. Surround myself with like minded people and whatnot. Then I think about how much fucking work that would be and I go get another beer from the fridge.
