Why is it again so many cities around the world constantly compete to have the Olympics hosted in their city / country?
Oh right, to make money.
No, no, no, they don't.
They do it to stroke their egos. The Olympics is financially a disaster for most people that host it.
This whole Olympics brand control is a fucking disgrace:
1. The Olympics sponsors pay for 20-30% of the costs
2. The host country's taxpayers pick up the rest of the bill.
3. The Olympics insist that companies pass a special fucking law to ban ANY other business from mentioning "games, olympics, london 2012" etc on any of their marketing. That means people can't even have olympic-themed charity events.
4. Non-sponsor businesses are going to be seriously damaged by the amount of disruption in London over the next few months.
5. We're expected to feel good about this.
I'm boycotting it (although I may relent for the Paralympics). I sincerely hope it's an unmitigated disaster so we are never "chosen" to host a major sporting event again. Luckily, given the government's propensity for fail, I may get my wish:

(I've nothing against major sporting events, just unaccountable bureaucrats telling me what to do)
