Once you hit it big questions....

So you are a super affiliate now. Even if you aren't and you are pushing good numbers. This is what you do for a living. When people ask you, "What do you do for a living?" "How do you make all this money?" What would you say? A serious answer, not a smart ass answer. How would you describe your profession? Would you say affiliate marketer? If you do, you would have to go into a lot of details I suppose, so they can understand. Thanks
Tell them you are a consultant, for example business consulting, or a marketing consultant. Or if you do a lot of websites, just tell them you are a web designer or a software engineer. I don't think there is any shame in saying affiliate marketer, but these other generic titles will probably satisfy their curiosity. If you incorporated or started your own LLC, why not tell them you are a CEO, a company president, or a local small business owner?

Thanks for all the replies. They were all helpful, both the career answer and insurance. I am 19, and all my friends are either in college or are starting steady jobs now. The question does come up, "What do you do?" Like if I go to college or what type of job I have. Thats the reason why I ask this.

Always a hard question to answer.

Most people I run into don't know the word affiliate.

So I end up saying I help people sell stuff online, which is close but no cigar, since I am more a coach on seo / web 2.0.

And as soon as you mention "sell something online" of course, people say oh ebay, right...

No wrong dumbass :)

But try explaining seo or web 2.0 to someone who has no idea that the listings to the right of google are actually sponsored links. :)

Way to hard for me.

As for insurance, I have my own company, so no problems there...

Depending on the amount of money you turn over, the next logical step is to create a corporation. Obviously talk to your accountant, etc first to make sure it's worth it from tax point of view, etc.

Cheers

Tim

My next question is mainly for people that do this for a living. What do you do for insurance since you don't really work for a company with benefits. Do you buy your own? Who do you use? How expensive is it? Do you get rejected a lot? I'm not sure how the whole insurance things works because I've always worked for a company that gave me the benefits.

Thanks

When I first started making money, I was always excited to tell people that I do affiliate marketing, which generally resulted in "what is that exactly?" After a few months, I got sick of explaining it so now I just tell people I'm a web designer/developer, its easier and usually they don't ask too much about it.

My family, outside of my mom and girlfriend, have no idea what I do. Also, I usually get asked how much someone like myself makes since most people think building web pages is uber simple (mainly family), kinda like how everyone with a pc that has microsoft word/publisher thinks they are a graphic designer. Keep it simple, don't brag about how much you make and people won't ask too much.

I have health insurance that I got through Bank of America (Anthem), full coverage, not too shabby. Word

Just tell them you do have an online business, and change the subject. Most of the time people don't really care. It's a converstion filler.

I go through 2 answers. If they are men I'd say something along the lines of getting websites on to the first page of google. If they are women, I'd say I'm an arse model and accuse them of checking out my arse...the rest is history.

if its a good looking woman: tell them you make amatuer porn and are always on the look out for new stars.

if its not a good looking woman: tell them you make amatuer porn and are always on the look out for new stars. (im not fussy :) )

if its a family member: tell them i write html, php, css, mysql, python, perl, ruby on rails , place any other programming language in here till they get bored

if its a bloke tell them you promote beauty products or something similar. they will think your gay and run away very quickly

sorry > back to the original thread :)

online marketer

I always say I'm in online marketing and that I get to manage the peeps that make the money. When people ask what that is - I tell them a few affiliate websites and to sign up for as many offers as possible!

I say i do web analytics, AM and SEM. If the questions persist I tell em that i was selling butt plugs the other day. Works like a charm.
