PageRank Update in Progress?!

Mine are all back to 0 now. I just checked out the PR tool in Google Sitemaps and it says that the page with the highest pagerank in june was one of my popular articles rather than my site's homepage. The whole viral link spreading thing must be doing more than my link exchange.

photographertips.net/photography/photo-picture-traveling-with-your-camera/
is listed to have 36 links while

photographertips.net
is listed to have 301 links

I don't figure.

It will probably take a couple of weeks for the PR updates to settle and you'll see your PR appearing and disappearing from day to day. Same kind of thing happens when your site has been in the sandbox and is starting to rank for your chosen keywords. In and Out, In and Out... Hmmm I mean in and out of the rankings but I've just thought of something I gotta do.. :D

This has been bothering me for ages.

Is your PR a direct reflection of your google ranking, like if its good to you have overall god rankings and if it's bad to you have not so good rankings. This is becuase my iste is still a 0 and I am not sure how much i should rely on SE traffic and whether to take the traffic I have now or plan on gettingmore in future (after the update).

Absolutely not. I've seen PR2 sites outrank PR6s.

Actually, PR is a function of sites linking to yours.
Meaning, your PR is determined by how many sites link to yours (and their PR).

See here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pagerank

PR is an important part in google's relevancy and ranking algorithms, but (of course) not the only one.

Relevancy: How good a site fits the search
Ranking: On what spot your page appears on the Search Engine Result Pages.

What this means is: If I search for "african statues" your site about "rear end buggery" will not appear in the SERPs even if you have a PR of 10.

But.. if I enter "muscle cars" and your Ford Mustang Site fits the search, a high PR will help your Ranking.

Hope that helps,

I see. So once my site is PR4 instead of it's current PR0 it will get better rankings on it's terms.
That's not necessarily true.

Plenty of my PR2 sites outrank PR6 sites and my PR6 sites are outranked by PR0 sites all the time.

IMO PR is just an indication of how Google views your site for a number of areas and I think topical relevancy is a good part of it. PR and rank may have some relationship however better PR sites don't necessarily rank better.

Everybody just raves about PR all the time but in the big scheme of things it's a just an indicator of your quality for Google and not a lot more.
