I've done this in the past, keyword being "past".
Sometimes its hard to hide you have money. When things got really good for me and my wife, we were in a really horrible situation with our house and car at the time. The car hardly ran and was a piece of shit and the house was like 80 years old, way to small for 5 people, and was just a piece of shit. We couldn't even cut our grass cause we didnt have money to fix the lawn mower.
So when things got good, we didnt tell anyone. However, we did buy a new SUV ( fitting 3 young kids plus 2 adults in just a 4 door car can be a nightmare sometimes, needed 3rd row seat for one of the kids. ). Few months later we bought a new home and had new furniture put into it. Few months after that I bought my wife her own SUV as both of us trying to drive 1 vech. was too much hassle when I needed to be somewhere and she needed to be at the school to pick up kids.
It wasn't long after all of that, that I ended up buying a boat for myself as our house was near a marina and we went on a couple vacations too ( honest to god I have never been on a vacation before in my life and it was fucking fabulous ).
So in the process of trying to better my life and make things comfortable for me and mine, everyone in her family and community saw this going on ( small town ). There is no way to hide you coming from nothing and living in nothing for years to suddenly being able to get a 5x larger house.. let alone the cars, boat, trips, and other things that came over a 2 year time frame.
People ask questions, people get jealous, people want to assume because they cant understand or fathom how you are doing it. Trust me, it was said I was selling drugs, pornography, stealing peoples ID's, and just about anything illegal online to finance our new slightly upgraded life. Whats sad is, our new life is not "baller" by any means. We live slightly better then middle class with our things. Everyone here owns a boat, every here owns 2 cars ( most of them are SUVs too, like ours ), and just about everyone has about the same kinda house we do now. Its nothing nobody else has already honestly.
People just know/seen what you came from just a few years ago and see a huge difference ( even if not baller ) and then they get all fucked up about it.
But back on topic.. I had a couple people come to me needing money, which never happened before. I made a few people work for it and gave them 50% upfront, to which they never finished up the job. I also loaned out about $6k to my wife's aunt who was getting a lawsuit settlement check that never came and I never got my loan back. I've also "given" out things like tools, equipment, a couple cars ( junker run around town types ) that never came back to me either. I had to go out and buy all new tools and equipment like lawnmower, weed eater, and leaf blower because that shit never came back.
Lesson was learned, dont give out shit or let people borrow shit unless you know 110% you dont want/need it back.
