This section is spammed to fuck, there's at least a dozen people I've seen post useful / interesting stuff, maybe they'd be more encouraged if this place was cleaned up. Could one or 2 people who frequent this section be made mods please?

I've been saying the same thing about the mailer section for a while. Good luck with your quest. I gave up on mine.

It also seems weird that a forum with such general technical prowess leaves cleaning up spam to manual labour of mods.

Yeah, the forum moderator paradigm is a bad fit. Even the workflow for users to report spam is a two-page-refresh form submission nuisance. It should be an ajax request so I don't even need to slow down from my chill amphetamine forum cruise.

The other shitty thing about the moderator paradigm is that you conventionally appoint the respected/mindful/conducive members. In other words, the people that become mods tend to be the last people that need to inherit a fucking painfully menial chore that will do nothing but erode their presence here.

dchuk, mattseh, and a handful of other people come to mind when I think of Development subforum bawses. But they're also our last remaining front from this subforum being renamed to "Generic Wordpress Questions". So we should shield them from modship.

Only solution I see is a simple vBulletin plugin to crowdsource downvotes like HN.

OR let some Indian SEO firm moderate our forum from pesky competitor spam but allow them to sell text links in their signature.

I'm no good for modding this section. I'm no programmer and I ask more questions than I can answer. No offense to those who've been suggested, but seosly should mod this section. This dude knows his shit and would be a huge asset to DD&P. A current mod should hit him up and ask if he's interested.

OSS banbot development effort anyone?

Off the top of my head:
Keyword banning for one post wonders ("Thanks", lots of other common spam)
Hitting google to see if a post has been copied from somewhere else
Look for links in first posts.
Look at "post velocity" for accounts < 50 posts

build a bot that does any of those things, then have it auto post and quote and report the spambot...make the mod's job easier.

Why not just autoban once it's proven to have few / none false positives? if in doubt, automate.

thank you for the overwhelming support. i'm ahead by a mile and election day is right around the corner. as your new overlord:

+ all web services must be written in python, basic or D.

+ all programming questions must be stated as an answer, jeopardy style, and all responses to questions must also have a picture of a cat attached.

+ every week, a random one of you will be chosen from a hat to drive me to my weed guy's house.

+ using or hinting to the word "soccer" will get you autobanned by my semi-intelligent killbots.

+ i'll build a statue of rage9 in the center of town, but it'll be one of those statues with a door into a public toilet at the base of it. he'll also have a special ordinance allowing him to spit on anyone he finds writing code in ruby.
