I want to design my own website headers and images and I can't decide which program I should learn Photoshop or Fireworks, any suggestions.

I prefer Fireworks, but if you are going to be colaborating with others, then you should go with Photoshop.

I find Fireworks much easier to use than Photoshop. If you are working with someone else, you can save files as .PSD (and import .PSD files), so compatibility shouldn't be an issue.

If I were motivated, I'd learn PS, because Adobe bought Macromedia, and Fireworks will probably be disappearing before too long. No point in them having two packages that do the same thing.

before you take anybody's advice, make sure they actually know how to design. message me in private and i can show you some samples.

i use photoshop for photos, and flash for graphics, whether i'm doing websites, banners, posters, books or whatever. it's fun working in vectors, especially once you start doing big brands or dealing with big clients who're gonna want shit in all sizes. despite being vector though flash is damn accurate with the pixels for you all webheads out there. flash is just like fireworks, except it's easier to use and more intuitive. it doesn't pack all that shit you don't need.

flash is definitely the design tool of the future. i hear a lot of experts say that. from architects to graphic/information designers to ruby programmers. there's just no limit to what it can do. you can design graphics in it, you can make animations in it, and you can program applications in it. every day people seem to find a way to use flash for something new and innovative. it's just too great of a tool to be missing out on.

for that artsy shit though, like ekiselev.com, you're gonna need illustrator.

ok then i'll just have to rewrite it...

i use photoshop for photos. for graphics, i use flash, whether i'm doing websites, logos, banners, posters, books, secret government masterplans or whatever. it's fun working in vectors, especially once you start doing big brands or work for bigtime clients (such as governments) who'd want shit in all sizes. despite being vector, flash is accurate with the pixels so all you webheads out there need not worry. it's just like fireworks, except it's easier to use and more intuitive, and it doesn't pack shit you'll never need.

on the flipside though, it's also far more powerful. flash is the design program of the future. a lot of experts say that, from architects to graphic/information designers to ruby programmers even. there's just no limit to what it can do. you can design graphics in it, you can make animations in it (though i personally think flash animations on websites is some straight up bullshit, at least until adobe manages to replace swf with their svg format) and you can program applications in it. every day now people seem to find new ways to use flash for something cool. trust me man it's just too big of a tool to miss out on.

for that artsy shit like the stuff on threadless.com though you're gonna need illustrator.

I tried to get into PhotoShop a few years back, but gave up when I found PaintShopPro could do everything I needed and PS was just too bloated. Kinda stuck with PSP although that's got more bloated too since Corel took over, keep meaning to make the switch to PS, just because it's standard. Might get around to it some day.

I use PS, it is a better, more advanced program. It takes a long time to get really good at it and very difficult to become an expert though. It's easy enough to learn enough to get you through simple web design and if you have the time you can learn many powerful things. It's the smart way to go.

IMO, it's going to be some time before Flash could replace the other major vector programs.

Adobe's got the market by the balls now, photoshop is the standard and will be for a long time. Plus, gotta love the new integration with flash.

Thank you everyone for their suggestion, I am leaning towards photoshop, although Fireworks seems like it would be easier to pick up, and kyree mentioned Flash, maybe I'll try them all. So much to learn and so little time.
