This comment on The Oil Drum The Oil Drum | Deepwater Oil Spill - A Longer Term Problem, Personnel - and Open Thread 2 cites a lot of resources about what is really happening with the BP well.

Apparently, this guy isn't one of the more well-known or respected members on that board, so it might all just be crazy-talk.

Although if you didn't know anything about the internet and read Eli's SEO Empire posts you'd probably think he was crazy, too.

Anyone with any oil & gas experience want to comment? Anyone want to try to track down the originator of this comment (Godlike Productions?)?

cliff notes please.

I attempted to actually read this drivel but the guy 1. writes in the exact same form as all those UFO/hollow earth wackos, and 2. uses so many fucking acronyms it's impossible to follow.

OP care to enlighten us on what he's actually saying?

If something like that happened I would expect major fuckage with the entire world's eco-system... aside from wiping out a massive habitat which will flow on to all dependent systems, the mass of oil of different density to seawater is bound to do some freaky shit... not to mention the inevitable war the US will probably declare on the UK because the senate has to blame someone... $20 billion will be a drop in the bucket next to the economic impacts that will flow on around the entire world at a time when the global economy is sitting on a precipice and really doesn't have the capacity to absorb any large shocks. All just in time for 2012...

In a nutshell, the problem isn't stopping the oil flowing at the top. The problem is that the blowout preventer and piping near the top is dependent on the structural soundness of the 1000 feet or so of pipe below it being cemented to the rock walls of the drill hole. Theory is that cement is being eroded out by leaks in the pipe at depth and eventually the whole structure will collapse effectively leaving a hole in the ground which would be near impossible to plug. It would also be susceptible to erode from the flow of oil thus widening the 'pipe' as time goes on and increasing the flow. Guestimates of 1.5 billion barrels of oil in the resevoir. If the well collapsed the point of unpluggable then then all that oil will come out.

Well even if everything melted down like he envisions all the 1.5 billion barrels would not come out.

First off even it nobody did anything at some point the downward pressure of the water would be greater than the upward pressure of the oil. Keep in mind most oil wells have to have the oil pumped or forced out by injecting them after they have been running awhile and the pressure at 5k feet down is pretty high.

Second they are in the process of drilling another well to relieve the pressure on this one, I believe that is about 60 days out to completion. Once that is done the flow on this one will drop considerably making it a lot easier to plug even if it is just a hole in the ground by that point.

my thoughts exactly.

60 more days and i cant even imagine how bad the gulf will be.

2012 here we come

global economic uncertainty - check
typical middle east bullshit - check
newly discovered massive mineral wealth discovered in said middle east - check
unprecedented environmental catastrophe - check

looks like we are doing great with setting the stage aren't we, i need to get on selling some 2012 insurance, cause if it happens i'll have much bigger problems then paying claims out.

Are you fucking kidding me?

This is just like all the people saying, "Fuck British people". Are you 5?

BTW http://www.envirowonk.com/content/view/68/1/

The oil spill currently isn't as bad as the media makes it out to be.

Is it terrible? Of course.

Unfortunately from further reading the scenario the OP mentioned (well collapsing - not the other stuff) is a possibility and not very farfetched.

Didn't notice anyone responded to this.

tl;dr: Guy uses a lot of acronyms and ellipses to make an argument that BP is covering up the fact that the well is broken and leaking into the sub-surface, may eventually collapse.

Other people come along and point out that this guy may be a whacko Ufologist-type.

Still others post pics of "potential" leaks of crude from the ocean bottom.

Are we STILL allowing those cocksuckes to use dispersant? If we let the oil rise to the surface, we can suck it up with supertankers.

I envision everything becoming far worse, oil spewing from dozens of new places, and a vast majority of our oceans being covered with a thin layer of oil. The sun won't be able to evaporate the water, which will heat the oceans. Everything dies, including us.

In any event, we're completely fucked. 2012 doesn't seem so insane now, does it?

I'm planning my "2012: End Of The World" party as we speak.

newly discovered massive mineral wealth discovered in said middle east - check

meh, those minerals were discovered in 2007, they're only being hyped now because the population is wondering wtf the reasons are for staying in what is looking like an unwinnable war.

why havent they nuked this bitch yet?
its been __proven__ in russia.

There'd be a shit ton of dead shrimp floating to the top of the gulf if they did that, and since they'll already be covered in oil, we may as well fry em up for the worlds biggest fried shrimp po'boy!
