Big media sites can and will always get away with more than the small GN indexed news sites, but even in the general web results Google has been known to deindex big brands at 1 point (or more). ie BMW briefly.
I wouldn't put it past them to make an example of a big site or two - dropping them from GN - and then reinclude them after the offending links are removed. And not sure how the NYT or Huffpo would react to a writer who caused their site to get deindexed by selling links or inserting aff. links (for example).
Not trying to piss on anyone's parade, but it's certainly worth using extreme caution so you don't fall into the Goog's crosshairs, if indeed they've stepped up the hunt on this.

Please don't put these in the same sentence. Huffpo has always been a craphole with more than questionable content. I would be surprised if they gave a shit about what their (unpaid) writers do as long as it doesn't look super fishy. In fact their whole business pitch is: write crap for us you can promote yourself and get some interwebs fame, right?
