Power outages make me rage.

Today is the second time a fuse blew in my city knocking out the power to my neighborhood, the first being yesterday. I CAN'T WORK ON MY GOD DAMN LANDING PAGES IF MY POWER KEEPS GOING OUT. </rage>

On a related note, I think it's time to buy an UPS from Best Buy, any suggestions fellas?

Always had luck with APC. Depending on how much stuff you want to be on UPS and how long you want it to run, you could get some higher end stuff online.

Often you can buy reconditioned stuff online cheaper, with new batteries.

Unless you just want something consumer that will allow you to quickly shut down gracefully. If you want to run for 30+ minutes in a power outage, I'd get something beefier that what BestBuy is likely to sell.

Laptop = Built-in UPS!

....Sort of.

AFAIK most UPS's will only power a PC for 20 minutes or so... So, they will stop sudden data loss.... But if your power is out for 8 hours, you're still up shit creek.

What would I do?

2 deep cell 12V car batteries, a trickle AC charger, and a DC inverter with enough median wattage to power a laptop and your DSL/Cable modem.

That'll get you a good 10 hours+ of play while the power is dead.

But I'm just ghetto like that. I'm sure someone else has some better suggestions.

Edit to add: Looks like I'm not the first...

Buddy has one... battery might last 30 mins for a desktop. I'd recommend keeping a fully charged laptop available at all times (i do).

On a side note- I lost power for 6 days, 2 years ago... in the middle of an ice storm. Fucking SUCKED. My mothers neighborhood was the only place within 30 miles with power... had about 20 people inside for days.

Yeah, I'm going to need something that will last 1-2 hours which is pretty much the normal response time for these outages. Good suggestions, I will look online and see what I can find.

Most I've gone was 3, and that shit SUCKED!!! To top it off it was August in Arizona... Fuck my life....

Jesus man, the most I've ever been without power was like 5 hours tops. Then again we rarely get huge amounts of snow/ice during the winter.

It was like the Apocalypse around here. The night all the power went out in the city it was dead silent and 10 degrees outside. It sounded like a giant monster was roaming through the streets, demolishing everything. Every few seconds you'd hear a new cracking sound and then a tree would crash to the ground. This went on for days. After day three my apartment was the same temperature inside as it was outside. I lived by candlelight and only left my zero degree sleeping bag to go to the bathroom. The day the power came back on was one of the greatest days of my life.

Watch that sine wave action. Some electronics like it pure. Lower end inverters use a square wave.

Like the car batteries but they usually aren't deep cycle. A couple of 6 volt golf cart batteries wired in series to make 12 volts should give some staying power.

I keep a gas generator in my garage. Was only like 300 bucks. Run an extension cord inside off it when the power goes out.

I live in MO and remember that storm too. But we only lost power for 4 days I believe. Luckily I was able to find a nice generator which was powerful enough to run my fridge, a heater, the tv, and the xbox 360. So yeah, I guess I was living pretty comfortably.

Yeah, I lost power then too in Nebraska but only for a few days. There was one in like 1997 and we had no power for about 2 weeks.

Now I have a Macbook and I keep a spare iphone that I don't update. It's an older version to where I can still get internet tethering for free. It's nice for going on trip/surfing in the car and nice for when the power goes out. I don't have to worry about powering up the modem/router.

You fools need to get some PROPANE.

I'll leave the deep cycles in the boat, and let the generator do the heavy lifting. I fucking hate batteries.

This is the worst outage I've been through.
Memphis Summer Storm of 2003 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The wife and I were on vacation in Clearwater, FL when "Hurricane Elvis" happened, but we came back to 12 more days without any power. 89 degrees at night with an upstairs bedroom sux ass.
Even when the power came back on in our neighborhood the cable/internet provider we had at the time stopped the generators they were running their routers on at ~10 PM, so all TV and internet stopped. That shit went on for another two weeks! Fuck Elvis! :music07: :action-smiley-052:
