PR2 domain with no backlinks?

So I was doing keyword research on a niche and found an expired PR2 domain, keywordblah.com. The domain expired on Feb of 08 and has no backlinks from what I can tell. Ive used a free backlink checker and googling site:domain both show 0 results.

Whats really stopping me from picking up the domain are the missing links. Is this normal for a domain thats been expired for that long (2.5+ years)? I was thinking of throwing it against webmaster tools to get the crawl errors and hope that it spits out links it cant reach or missing.

How else should I research the domain? What else should I be looking for?

Thanks imkazu, i used something similar and got the same results.

I ended up getting the domain after looking at cached pages. This gave me enough of the site structure to buy the domain and develop. The good news is it looks like only a few 301 redirects are needed to get the most of the historic data. Bad news is the old structure may not show up in google. Oh well at least its an easy PR2.
