It took a strange turn over a decade ago when it outgrew small circle. Check out Game by Neil Strauss, he wrote about a lot of it.
RSD actually grew exponentially after Game came out. All the negative attention drove traffic to their sites where they captured a percentage as customers. They like the attention because so far it's only been good.
