Question about authority sites

I'm looking into building an authority site for a certain niche and I'm wondering what a good number of exact monthly searches is for both my main keyword and related long-tail keywords combined. What number would you say would make it worthwhile building this site out to an authority on this topic?

In terms of monetization, my niche has some opportunities for affiliate marketing, e-commerce (affiliate-based) and of course AdSense ads so I don't see a problem there. I'm just wondering if I would be able to get enough traffic to it so it can generate some income.

As for the domain, the EMD is not available but I can easily add a small word before or after it and turn it into a brand.

Cheers

I'm talking news, articles, tips & tricks, a web shop for directly related products (affiliate based), community forums, the whole shebang. It will be THE place to go for people interested in this niche (sports related).

Then don't worry about choosing a single "main keyword". If you're going all out, most traffic is going to come from random long-tail keywords.

Start a brand and don't worry about getting an EMD (unless you can afford a really good one, lol). Build a community, people are going to recommend you, link to you, etc. Once you have enough data to tell what products/keywords are converting - leverage your authority status to quickly take over the SERPs with targeted SEO campaigns and well created pages.

It's a very long process.

But there's always a limit to how big an actual niche is. If I'm going to be putting in a lot of time to design and build out this site, it should be worth it in the long run.

At what point do you say "this niche isn't big enough to make it all worthwhile"? If you're looking at monthly search numbers for a niche (combining all the relevant keywords), what number is too big and what number is too small?

I'm personally interested in the niche and all, but if I'm only going to be making $500/mth off of it after putting in a lot of time and effort, I'd rather go on and find a bigger niche.

True, but is there a different way then of finding out how big a niche is?
How do you assess whether a niche is big enough or not to build an authority site around?

^^Almost any niche is "big enough" for a real authority website. You need to approach this from a completely different perspective.

I'm just going to go ahead with this. It's something I like and for that reason there's no real downside to it, except for putting some time into it.

Appreciate the feedback!

Pretty much every niche is big enough to make an authority site around as you can target hundreds of keywords in that niche.

An authority site should cover topics not keywords , you need to be the one stop shop for people who want answers , the service or product etc

The niche's main keyword (the name of the sport) in question has ~4,000 exact monthly searches (broad ~75k, phrase ~40k). I'm gunning for this one and obv a lot of the related ones, so I feel the number of searches with the phrase is a good number to look at.

I still believe the niche is fairly small. Maybe too small to provide decent monthly income?

Either way, I'm in the process of building the site and in a way that I can re-purpose it for other authority sites.

Why not research niches on Flippa.com
See exactly what niches are making good money.
Go after setting up an authority in that niche.
At least then you will know that there will be a decent reward for your efforts.

Basically you should know almost exactly how much your site will make once you achieve certain goals.
Without this you are running bling and could just wind up burning time and money.
