Question about supporting Israel

How is what happens to another country on the other side of the world the business of the USA? Further, can the USA afford that? ...

I've never understood why so few people recognize that the US/Israel relationship isn't totally one-sided. Pretty much every major tech company has a significant presence there and a lot of non-trivial advances have specifically come from their Israeli HQs. The stuff to come out of Intel's branch there is particularly interesting (huge, major processor breakthroughs made thanks to the unorthodox approaches their employees came up with). Everything I've ever read on the topic cites their military, history of turmoil, political structure, % of population made up of immigrants, etc. for contributing heavily to an adaptive, unorthodox mentality that is extremely well-suited to innovation and entrepreneurship.

Obviously, that's just one part of a much larger issue - but there's a lot of value coming out of such a tiny nation.

They are less than 2% of the US, so I can't imagine they really account for that much of the donations.

But this is made up for by the amount of wealth and clout they have per capita. Vanity Fair did a feature a few years ago on the top 100 most powerful people in America. The top 53 were all Jewish, and most of the bottom 47 directly worked for, or were lieutenants of the top 53. All that clout translates into a lot of financial power, and control over the flow of donations from that community.

Not to mention that Israeli telecom cos run game on data from private billing to secure federal and military installations. Intel indeed.

I have a hunch that if the Palestinians stop resorting to terrorism, Israel wouldn't have a problem with them, one-state or two-state.

Heck, Israel has a lot of peaceful Arabs living there today.

there's fucked up people on both sides of the fence

Israel is situated in a hate-filled part of the world. The hate is fueled and perpetuated by culture and religion.

Until that is fixed, nothing that Israel or anyone else can do will stop the tit-for-tat tragedy and war-mongering. It has developed into a never ending cycle of hate, anger, violence, racism, on both sides.

If the USA and other Israel allies walked out totally, it is only a matter of time before that country would be in a worse situation than the people of Rwanda. Yes, genocide would result. Only a few people in the USA would really like to see that outcome. So this will not happen.

Fix the culture of hate, then Israel could survive and be at peace with her neighbors.

I dont bust my ass 12 hours a day at work so Israel can take my taxes

Fck em plain and simple.... they dont give me shit

Too much Hollywood. You don't nuke a neighbor without severe damage to your own environment. These people are just over the hill.

Hollywood is different, put down the remote.

we support israel with arms

they use the against Muslims

making muslims angry

angry muslims attack us for supporting israel

our policy for support to israel is what fulls muslim rage.

until this is changed terrorism will be a problem.

politicians won't take the bull by the horns and address this because of all the jews
that live in this country and depend on their vote.

Israel's biggest enemy is actually Russia. That's something the media doesn't tell you, because they want you to hate on the arabs/muslims more... but I've seen many videos where Russian diplomats and intellectuals openly diss Israel big time.

It's pretty clear what's gonna happen in 2012...

Russia, China, Iran, Pakistan, Arab countries

VS

US, UK, France, etc...

Watching from home: Australia, Canada, Eastern & Northern Europe.

87 percent of Jews vote Democrat - Israel News, Ynetnews

Few democrat politicians want to cut off aid to Israel, but at the same time, they are overall less gung ho about providing military support than typical republicans.

As someone else touched on, this type of support for Israel actually helps more in getting votes from evangelical Christians. It does have to do with end time prophecy for some of them, but there are other Christians who pay no attention to that, yet take the same kind of stance.

Israel is so linked in their minds with Jesus, and Israel was mentioned so often in Sunday school, that they have more of an emotional bond to it than they do to Sweden, Brazil or wherever else. American Jews have an emotional bond, but they also have a better idea of the current scene is Israel, and probably realize that it is a lot more complicated than just throwing military money at it.

I'm not saying that being more informed makes people more likely to vote democrat, but on this particular issue, it makes it easier for them to see past the "vote for me or the holy land will get destroyed" type of rhetoric.
