This is a total newb question, but that's why I'm posting it here :)

Even though most offers have a landing page of their own, would I still want to create a custom landing page? If so, I'm assuming my custom page would submit the same form and fields to the same submission URL, just change the look and copy?

generally, your landing page is a "pre-sell" page...you talk about the product...its benefits...get the person excited to buy it...then direct them to the product page to buy.

Right, but what I'm specifically wondering...

Say I'm looking at running an offer that is a one or two page submit. Can I just build a landing page to replace one of those submit pages, where the submit is done on my landing page instead of on the offer's landing page? This way the visitor doesn't have to visit multiple pages.

What you want to do is build your own form landing page and pre-populate the form of the advertiser. Usually advertisers won't allow that because they have to worry about what you might be saying about the offer, this is VERY true for lead based offers where a fake promise on your part and massively increase conversions but screw the lead quality for the advertiser.

I'd suggest you ask your AM about the offer before you even get started because most won't allow this. The ones that do will also want to approve the page before you run any traffic with it.

Thanks for the response Mike.

So if I'm working on a 1 or 2 page form/lead offer, the goal of a landing page would just be to convince the user to continue on and fill out the form? If I can't have the user fill out a form on my landing page, it seems like my landing page is just 1 more unnecessary step that slows the visitor down.
