Hey guys,

I'm doing some work on a site that really only needs to rank on google.com.au

What do I need to do to make sure it ranks here without just boosting it's generic ranking? Is it a matter of getting links from .com.au's or is it more important to submit the business to local business directories?

Has anyone had any success with this before?

If you're using a to level domain like .com .info or.org and it is hostd in the US the search engine think you geo location is the US. You could get .au domain and/or get hosting in austraila.

Man there are many softwares for this purpose with which you can rank on #1 on google..

The site is a .com.au that has Australian hosting so I should be good there.

Thanks for the advice. I'd never thought about the importance of hosting.

^get links from local sites.. or quote/link to local sites (.au sites in this case)

but i am sure it would be easier with an .au extension if you have not done much work on the original site

Sweet. Thanks for explaining that. I wasn't sure what he meant.

Yeah... For some reason, the guy who set up the site didn't go for a .com.au tld. Not sure why. He seems to be one of those guys who's really into trying to impress people rather than do things well so I shouldn't be surprised.

I'll see if I can talk him into redirecting to a local tld.

Now, to find people selling links from .com.au sites...

Well if the term isnt that competitive then ranking on local searches isnt that big of a deal. Since you already have a au domain and au hosting I think you are good to go. Now you just need to do normal seo stuff. Like on page stuff and linking and all that good stuff. As kakaboo posted getting locals sites to link to you would be a good idea. But i believe that would be a really difficult task. You might just wanna stick with building links like you would to a normal site.
