I've got a www.*keyword*.com.au domain and I want to know if it's possible to get it on the first page of google in the USA for that keyword?

Local traffic isn't anywhere near enough to make it worth while setting up if I can only get local traffic but if I can rank for international traffic, then things should be sweet.

Does anyone have any expereince with this?

Yes I actually find it easier. I ranked a .sk domain "by accident" on the first page of google.com for a multi-million pound industry.

Also one site I am working on right now is a ".co.uk" and is #3 on google.com and #27 on google.co.uk.

I find it much easier to get links from .com domains than it is to get links from .co.uk / .sk / .com.au domains. To answer your question, yes.
