For you SEO experts out there, would you rather start off with a 7 yr old .info with about 420 backlinks (let's assume low quality as I have not yet done that analysis) or a .com.

.info is exact name match of main keyword that is also keyword in 50% of relevant longtails.

.com is "mainkeyword"finder.com and could be built out as a brand. It has no age.

My feelings are that the .info would be easier in the first 6 months, but long term 12 mo+ the .com might be best choice.

Niche is moderately competitive. 1 major player and not much else. Goal would be to get to #2 for all main and longtail keywords and then try to over take competitor over several years.

Competitor has an exact match hyphen .com

Any opinions?

.info isn't that horrible. Honestly though if you want to make this site "big" go with .com it's more brandable. If this is just a shitty niche site or a small site go with the .info.

.infos have been a nightmare for me. When they first came out I jumped on the occasion and bought a bunch. None of them made it to Top-3 despite months of quality content and SEO. The best I got was like #7 or #8 spot which is crap. I then decided to buy the available .nets and .orgs of those same .infos (since .coms were all taken), did a 301 redirect and got in the Top-3 within weeks. Go figure.

.infos are dead to me.

i think .com domain is very best for seo because .com domain you can promote anywhere to easly.
 
.infos can be useful, but for your purposes/goals I would definitely go with the .com.

If it were me, I would grab them both, build the site on the .com and then 301 the .info to the .com.
 
you can still get good traffic potentially with .info names but there is obviously more potential with a .com and as said above if you want the site to be massively popular you are definitely gonna need a .com
