Recession proof, brick & mortar businessness- liquor store, hair cutting?

Car washes and public storage facilities... at least according to another thread from wickedfire (and wickedfire would never lie to me right?)

I'd check into a fast food franchise. Have you ever seen a McD's that was empty? They're probably highest cost franchise, but I've never seen one go out of business.

Warriorforum down or something?

what a crock of shit. You think most failed business owners didn't work their asses off? Being recession proof has to do with demand - not work ethic or passion.

it was more or less a statement. there is a huge gamble when you are a business owner any way you slice it, and if it fails, id much rather know that I put everything I had into building it so I can take that knowledge and use it to my advantage in my next venture. A franchise is a cop out.

It sounds like you're a little attached to the ego side of being a business owner. Doesn't sound like Unabomber has any desire to do hard work. In fact, he specifically stated that he does not want to manage the business. He wants hands-off, low-risk annuity streams. Presumably, so he can focus his time on doing the work he is passionate about or enjoying the freedom he's earned. For financial security, I think a franchise is a great option because of the systems that make them successful are already in place.

Is your area already saturated with Subways? Starting up one of those is pretty affordable. ~$100-200k

Yeah i heard this is the best voted franchise of last year, didn't know it was that cheap, if it is I think I just opened up a subway. :)

My brother in law owned a Fantastic Sams
He said it sucked. Employees stole all the time and customers were just looking for cheap haircuts.
Profits sucked.

I have been lookng into FANTASTIC SAMS, SPORTS CLIPS

and then just normal liquor stores through sunbelt.

What else would you guys buy with 500k or so USD. Recession resistant, guaranteed income basically.

I keep hearing bad shit about sports clips and fantastic sams. I *will not* be self-managing.

keep in mind that with most restaurants you're looking at around 12 years before you've made back your investment

ice cream truck, you dont need to pay for a store front where most retail stores
are stuck geographicaly,

atleast you can go out to the streets where people live, parks, malls, baseball games. ALL ABOUT MOBILE GUYS!!!!!!

My uncle owns one but his tire got a flat a few months ago and he couldnt afford to replace it so hes collecting unemployment.

That's cos you don't hear about it. It happens often. (friend of mine used to work on franchises in trouble)

The really good ones, the franchisor tends to operate direct these days, leaving the shitty ones for the franchisees.

Also, the food business is very, very hard fucking work. Even if you have "manager", for the first few years.

My Brother-in-law has 7 McD's stores in Indiana now, and believe me, you won't even get CLOSE to one for less than a Mil.

And One store...you starve to death. Two? You break even or make a bit, and that's IF your wife, kids, and every other bit of free help you can find mans them for you.

At 4-5 stores is when you start to cash in. And if you fail? Simple- you never hear of that because corporate takes them over, installs management, and runs them until they can find another dreamer to take a flyer, or pawns them off on an established guy.

McD's is a HARD business, mateys- but if you can last, it can be massive. Not for the weak hearted or undercapitalized, though ;)
