Well, I did it....went from 5 days at Wal-Mart to 4 days at Wal-Mart so I can write for pay more and work on my own Internet projects. I officially start next week!

I can't financially take the plunge to jump in full time, but this is a good solid big step forward! I'm SO excited! :banana_sml:

Today I'm going to test to see how long it REALLY takes to make what I make in 8 hours at Wal-Mart. I usually write sporadically...starting and stopping because I get distracted, but today I will focus and find out how long it really takes.

Now think about it....who would lie about working at Wal-Mart (anyway you want to spell it) if you didn't really work there? :) LOL

(Even spell check uses the hyphen!)

Since no one previous said it properly, I'll just say

Good Luck Bra

Jan - maybe you can get an employee discount on white gloves? Narsticle's is all dirty with Zimok's blood.

To earn the same amount writing at home as a day at Wal-Mart :

6.5 hours-if I have to do research and include some time being distracted
5 hours-if I know the subject and include a little time being distracted

I'm at one of the higher pay levels because I'm in the vision center and I just got a raise, so I have to work a little more to match it.

Anyone remember when I was trying for the office job where I work at in group homes?

Well, in the past two years at Wal-Mart...2 pay level raises (changed departments) and 3 raises after evaluations.

With the cutbacks to social services, everyone there got a 10% cut in pay and there were many positions eliminated which meant demotions. Glad things worked out like they did. Plus I have some flexibility in hours at Wal-Mart! :)

Stop comparing your salary to Walmart levels. Your website says you charge $0.02/word. There are illiterate DP users from India that charge more than that. Stop underselling yourself.

Wow. I really am rooting for you to quit your day job with Wal-Mart.. man I hate that company.

I will consider raising my prices. I do have to match...then surpass what I was making at Wal-Mart.

I know I can....I know I can.....I know I can...choo choo

(for those without kids around its from the Little Train That Could..."I think I can...")

Okay, this may be a little Machiavellian, but have you considered this:

1) Spend most of your time on "business development" - calling up folks offline and on line who need writing services, networking, etc

2) Get all the contracts you can and outsource it for much lower costs - try college students or foreign workers

3) Once you have the articles written, you can personally edit them for quality; alternatively you can hire a US/Canadian/Australian/Kiwi(aka New Zealander) or Irishman/woman - in other words someone with English as a first language taught in Schools - also try South Africans.....
What you pay the editor will still probably cost less than spending time doing it yourself.
As an example, if you spent 4 hours a day drumming up contracts - let's use some numbers:

You spend 4 hours a day prospecting which generate $500 in contracts....

Lets' say you are charge on the high end even - $25/hr. Well if you would have outsourced the articles (even the editorial work), it would have cost $300 in total. So $550-$300= $250. You have just more than doubled your profits easily....

Of course it probably wouldn't even take $300 to do those articles. And if you just happen to love writing, you can spend less time prospecting and more time writing....

Now you go from being "self employed" to being a "business" - in other words you've set up a system that makes money independently of you!!

Then you can quit your job at Wal-Mart (lol) sooner and be happier doing so!

Good luck for you and let us all know how it went!!!

http://www.wickedfire.com/members/riddarhusetgal.htmlriddarhusetgal-I have thought of some of the things you wrote...great ideas. I have three writers lined up to be part of Jan's Writing Services when I have more work and plan to do just what you suggested-do the final edit to assure quality and consistency.

My son, Bob Schmuck, started me thinking about creating a system of doing things myself, develop the process, then hire others to do it.

I've spent a lot of time working a couple jobs and am finally in a position to devote time making the move away from wage earning. Self-employment is among the first steps to financial freedom!

I do love to write, I plan to be able to write more for my own projects down the road and less for pay.

Walmart....Wal-Mart....still the same place....both are correct since the redo on the image is still ongoing.

Just cut down on the track jumping to go smell flowers in the fields!! LOL (I still remember the story from when my mommy read it to me. It was a Little Golden Book hard cover. Oh, and I did read it to my daughters years ago.)
