so i'll be in San Francisco for 1 month this April with 3 friends of mine, and we are looking to rent a nice apartment for the whole stay...any suggestions about areas of the city where we should stay, and sites/agencies we should contact?

It depends on what you plan on doing. But almost all areas of the city are a mix of good and "bad". A hotel may be cheaper, though. On SFgate there are always listings of what is available with pictures. Also you can sort the rentals on craiglist by picture.

Also the Castro is an okay area. Plenty of restaurants, shops and a beeline from Downtown. Try a spot in Fillmore or North Beach. The Mission has places too, but you also get a bit of Tenderloin. Western Addition or further down Geary but then you are moving towards the beach / ocean and less "activity".

You probably would get far more bang for your buck by staying on a loft in Berkeley or Oakland and taking Bart to the city or getting a rental car (monthly) when you want to be in San Francisco specifically.

There are plenty of lofts available just on the other side of the tube. Making for a 5 minute trip to downtown.

You should probably stay in oakland unless you want to get teh geh on you.

Depends on what you want to do when here and what your style is. The neighborhoods that I would recommend for someone looking to hangout for a month with their friends.

Marina - Sorority type sluts, frat/bro guys, good cougar hunting at Balboa Cafe. Some great bars, and possibly the best place to stay for getting outside and hanging out on the beach or going for a run on the water.

NorthBeach - Slightly older demographic with more families, still plenty of younger folks, lots of good bars around, great Italian joints all over (the little italy of SF), close to Fishermans wharf area and walking distance to the Financial District

Pacific Heights/NobHill - Although Pac Heights and NobHill are really two different neighborhoods they both feed to the same social scenes and provide a somewhat central location in the city that puts you in striking distance of the best neighborhoods to go out in for a person in their 20s/30s (imho). A $8-10 cab ride will get you to the Mission, Marina, NorthBeach, FiDi, or out Richmond or Sunset districts.

Mission - If you're a Latino 'banger or your pants are tighter than your girlfriends and you ride a fixie then the Mission is for you. Amazing Latin cuisine, plenty of good places to hangout and grab a few drinks. Getting 7 tacos at 2:30 in the morning after boozing and dancing around 16th and Valencia is the shit that night and the next morning ;)

Outer Sunset/Richmond - If you want to be a few blocks from the Pacific and plan on renting a car because you want to check out a bunch of places outside of SF then this might be a good idea. Parking is prevalent (not so much in most other areas) and your $$$ goes farther in terms of getting a spot, but you will also be pretty far away from what I would consider to the be the real night life of SF.

PM with questions

Also, vrbo.com FTMFW - great call Will

FuzzyBunny laid that down pretty nicely. It definitely depends on your style. I came to SF from NYC, where the East Village/LES was my spot...

Therefore, I have to go MISSION all the way! A little 'grittier' than what you might be used to, but a COOL F*CKING 'HOOD. Just stay away from Mission Ave unless you're a user, or going for the best burrito ever. On/around Valencia has more yuppy/hipsters and a great variety of food (quality, but cheaper than other parts) and shops.

PM me if you need any info. I'm back in NY now, but will be going out to SF for extended periods of time in April for AdTech and then Sept/Oct/Nov.

Good luck!

Oh, and buy a bike... I used it every day!
