I keep hearing how ringtones are so saturated in ppc and everyone and their mothers are doing them, etc etc but do you think it's possible for a noob with limited experience in ppc to start up a campaign in yahoo and make some money almost right off the bat? (by that I mean within the first month.) Or should I go for something that I don't know is profitable but not as saturated and just try that and hope I get lucky.

Sure if you got a ton of money to lose at first, so if you're willing to lose 100k the first half ot hte month you maybe could recoop that and 20k more the second half

go go go

I would say take a few hundred and give it a try. The experience alone will help.... helped me! (lost a little $$$ at first)

You will probably lose money.

The only people making money in any saturated niche are the parties who have been there a long time and understand the market; doesn't matter whether it's payday, ringtones, dating or [fill in the blank].

To answer your question specifically, if you're going to do ringtoes, you need to put together a comprehensive marketing plan and know specifically what you want to bid on. To begin, the more long-tail you go, the better chance you have of making money. Look at this way:

Ultra long-tail: Spend $1, make $2
Long-tail: Spend $1, make 1.5
Medium-tail: Spend $1, make 1.2
Short-tail: Spend $1, make .90

It's all about the angle you take at it. There is always more room to be made in any industry you just have to think outside the box. Ringtones are definitely saturated so taking the approach of bidding on a million artist names + ringtones keywords isn't going to work. Your best bet is probably focusing on 1 artist and building out from there. Although many people despise the content network I've had a lot of success with it. I'd personally find a few sites that run adsense for some semi-popular artists. There could be a blog, forum, or whatnot about that artist which you can advertise on. Depending on the ad placement and ad copy I'm sure you could get some cheap quality clicks. You won't kill it most likely because at that level there just isn't enough volume usually, but if you're on a budget in my opinion it's a great way to start.
