Running a Real Holiday: Journaling 135 Days of Joyful Vacation

So much for "forced productivity".... since you started this thread you were more away from your business than working on it it seems. Even when you are "not home" you were not able to work on your articles?

I can confidently say that I've done more while taking a shit than you since you started this thread. Can you please stop being lazy and start posting interesting updates?

I just hope the content you're "working on" is much more interesting than the content you've been updating this thread with.

Mods, can you re-name this thread to

Get to work or get out. There's only so much keyboard yelling we can do to "force productivity" for you. It's up to you, mang.

November 3rd 2014 - Day 19

Got in about 6.5 hours of work on the site today.

I completed the post I started before I left. I had ~300 words written (the intro) and the final post was published with 1,932 words. I found it was a little harder to pretty it up because of the length, but I think I did well in the end. I'm going to have a friend who is interested in the topic read it over and note his initial reaction/questions/thoughts.

After I completed it I started putting together the plan for the next article which I will start tomorrow. I've got the headline, featured image, and target keywords all mapped out. I will need to do some research, but not as in depth as the last article. I'm pretty confident I can complete this from 0 to published in 1 day (tomorrow).

After working, I worked out, walked my dog, and read for half an hour. I plan to read again tonight before bed and ease myself back into reading 50 pages a day again. I'm reading Antifragile by Nassim Taleb and am finding it a complex book, but doing my best to power through it.

Wat? I've been following along with this since day #1, and thought it was going to be a serious journal. What does reading 50 pages a day have to do with running a real business? Seriously, what the fuck are you doing? You don't see all these people telling you that you are completely slacking at all levels?

I don't think you want it bad enough, I think you should really self-reflect, cause now you are talking about fucking walking your dog, and reading books - did you just switch to trolling?

If you wanted to make this thing a success, you have to have passion from deep within to really work non-stop till you hit your goals. I remember days where I'd sat there coding and designing for 18+ hours at a time, and only going to bed cause I was physically unable to move anymore, but I had the burn and the desire. Shit I did that again last tuesday through friday.

You need to re-ignite that flame, if it ever existed, cause telling us you fucking walked the dog, no offense to the dog, is ridiculous. Next week you will be telling us about your chores around the house?

You have to really want it - you'll forget to sleep, eat, or shower to get to the next level for this project. Do you have a personal revenue goal or traffic goal - by a certain date?

Have you given up?

It's like the whole fucking world's gone to shit, and no one wants to win anymore...

Every day that you update this thread you're taking money away from people with cancer. Helping people isn't a punishment, it's a reward...

Real businesses laugh at writers who produce 1 blog post per day.

Geezes.

There's 2 ways to perceive this thread:

1) "HAHA OP GOT HIS ASS KICKED LOL"
2) "Now OP can measure his progress against the expectations of real hustles and will eventually turn it around and get into grind mode."

I choose the latter. I don't know about anyone else here, but Stacc's public flogging has inspired me to reevaluate my work ethic and start grinding away harder.

Thanks everyone!

P.S. Staccs, I remember buying content from you 1.5 years ago. You were professional, the writing was excellent (copywriter status), and your turnaround times were impeccable. If you can pull that off for a client, I KNOW you can hustle hard for yourself. Good luck bro! You got this. Done > Perfection, Freedom > Intellectual Stimulation. ;)

This is the most interesting journal I've ever read on WF, although I still can't tell if I'm being trolled...

November 4th 2014 - Day 20

Spent about 7 hours again today.

Completed a post from 0%-100%. It's considerably less information dense than the other posts, but it answers the top questions asked about the topic.

Because it was a smaller post than usual (plus I might be getting a little faster) I completed my content dev process for another post, decided I didn't want to write that one now, and then completed the process for another topic, then started writing it.

It only came out at just under 400 words after I wrote it. I decided not to publish it as a standalone post, but instead include it in a megapost. Something like "These 3 Things Are Keeping You From X". I'll finish that post tomorrow, and hopefully be able to get the next post started too.

If I'm able to continue or improve on the 1.5ish posts per day pace I'll be able to finalize the theme design and start working on non-content, or more exciting content things, stuff in a week from now.

It's clear that the level of work I had become comfortable with isn't enough. I was (am) working like my food and shelter is guaranteed for life (it's not), and it's unfair to my parents. I want to be able to look back 30 days from now and see that I've shed the majority of bad "working" habits I've obviously become accustom to over the past two years.

I don't really have a problem with the posts/tags that have been left in this thread as of this post. It's deserved, and I can scrape away constructive feedback from most of them. What will really hurt is if it's more of the same thing 113 days from now.

I'd love to hit $200/day, but it's a completely arbitrary number. My monetization plans are still rough. I have longterm plans for this site, so I will sacrifice earnings from an Adsense block if it effects a longer play.

So you spent 7 hours writing 400 words of content instead of spending $5 to have someone else write it for you? Your problem isn't laziness, it's time management.

No one gives a fuck how high quality your content is because no one is reading it. Stop writing articles and dicking around with your theme and spend 100% of your time building traffic to the site.

So you spent 7 hours writing 400 words of content instead of spending $5 to have someone else write it for you? .

No. The second article was 400 words before I decided to make it into a bigger post. I could have been clearer describing that.

I have no interest building a site with $5 content. I've done that before, and it made money, but I didn't enjoy it at all. I'll work on traffic once the site doesn't look like it's under construction.

November 5th 2014 - Day 21

I didn't have much time to allocate to this project today. Family stuff and chores around the house was most of my day.

The time I did spend was efficient. I just about completed the megapost I started yesterday. It's at 99%. I read it over and I'm going to add some facts to it tomorrow to give it more legitimacy before I hit publish. That won't take more than 30 minutes.

After finishing everything but the facts for that post I did the research for tomorrow's post. I found 2 YouTube videos that go in-depth on the topic. I learned the gist of things from those and will reference them tomorrow. I believe facts are important in creating linkbait. People love sharing quotes and statistics.

Essentially I got done 80% of what I've done in each of the past two days in considerably less time. This is likely a combination of Parkinson's Law and a slight improvement gained over the past 3 weeks (or 1.5 weeks of actually accomplishing something). Being a perfectionist is clearly putting a bottleneck on this. I'm about to head out the door but I'm going to try and apply the takeaways of today to the rest of the week.

Another day, another 1.5 posts done. 1 more week of this until I have a foundation I can work with.

Just think about it... actually write 2-3 posts a day and you'll get to start in 3 days.
