Since now established online businesses running on .co.uk domains are put under threat and unnessesary hassles from Nominet
After Raising Over $4.5 Million Selling 1 & 2 Letter .Co.Uk Domains, Nominet Proposes .UK Domains | The Domains

we are holding a three month consultation about the potential introduction of a new service known as direct.uk, which would be specifically designed for businesses that are or want to get online, with a new shorter domain name of internet.uk rather than internet.co.uk.

Question to folks who run online UK business:

Any ideas as to running an online UK-based business from abroad being a non-uk resident?

I have a .co.uk doman name (as a non-uk registrant) that I plan to build out my future big business that will most likely be my core asset. But for it to work out, big startup funds are needed first that's why i left it till the better days. IN case grandfathering (like it was done by most registries in the world, .com.mx owner has the first right to buy without any auction matching .mx domain introduced later) will be allowed by Nominet I need to be prepared for it and be a UK-based business first.

what about hiring somebody to handle phone, fax??? possible without hiring full-time?

Plenty of virtual office kinds of arrangements available. Just google for it. British Ltds are cheap and easy to setup.

Why do you need a fax?

And also you can just get a virtual number that redirects anywhere in the world if you want to answer the phone or alternatively just hire a freelancer from peopleperhour.com.

Why are big start-up funds needed?

Lots of people seem to get in this trap of "I need money to do anything", and never actually do anything.

In respect to a UK corp, it's easy. A quick google search answers all your questions.

should be a heavily scripted service+content site with a lot of competition existing from multimillion companies (Monster etc...). But considering the news, i should at least roll out an authority info site at least before the cashgrab by nominet starts

Start out with something basic then. Don't go so heavily scripted, just get something up that does the minimal thing.

From the sounds of things it's not something that requires tons of RND, so it wouldn't be too expensive.
