The US do very well invading deserted 'weakling' territories a la Afghanistan, Iraq... But they are infamous for their cowardice in the face of the real SUPERpowers i.e Russia, UK, France, China etc.

Obama is a very smart man, and will not risk having his countries skirt pulled down by Putin. I doubt the US will involve themselves in this conflict... they don't have the finesse, balls or firepower to oppose Russia... i.e the Cold War when Russia was ready to blow the US to smithereens etc

I hate to break it to you, but missile defense systems are for DEFENSE, and are quite different from the nuclear tipped ICBMs they are designed to shoot down.

If you believe the US dropped billions of dollars in missile defense across Europe and the MIddle East, but didn't build any offensive capabilities into them, then I have some ocean property in Kansas to sell you.

Also there are reports of Putin's army moving out from Crimea and moving towards Zaporozhie region.

Yes, it's all about gas and oil.

The only thing that will stop Russia is the EU not buying oil and gas from them. (70% of Russian oil and gas goes to the EU - there is no pipeline to China from Russia because the Russians think providing China with energy will make the Chinese economy too powerful).

In 2006 after Russia temporarily turned off the gas to Ukraine (and hence to the EU), the EU issued a directive about reducing dependence on oil and gas from Russia - and they left it to the member states on how to do it.

A pipeline got built from Norway to Britain and then from Britain to France to carry Norwegian gas to the continent. Another pipeline got built from Morocco to Spain.

Loads of countries are investing in wind power - Denmark, Germany, Britain - 17% of Britain's electricity is now generated by wind.

Spain has been investing heavily in solar power, France is nuclear powered. The countries mainly dependent on Russian gas are the Eastern Europeans who've been slower to switch to renewables.

But eventually we'll all get there - it just takes time. At that point, Russia will collapse into a puddle of nothingness and go back to the dark ages.

BTW the war in Syria is also about gas to the EU. The Saudis and Qataris wanted to build a pipeline to the EU that had to go through Syrian territory and Assad said no. So the Saudis and Qataris hurled jihadis at him.

Basically peace in a large chunk of the world depends on the EU weaning itself of oil and gas and therefore making these wars a poor ROI for the oil countries who wage them.

Yes France, that small corporation in Europe, are - historically - war GODS! The US's shitty little army still studies most of their tactics till this day. Rudyard Kipling has gone on record saying about the French: "Their business is war, and they do their business." France is one of the most revered military forces in the world, with the third highest military spending on the planet and an estimated 300 nuclear warheads at their disposal. They would trample all over the US (and most other nations) at just the slightest sign of aggression.

The UK a.k.a the Financial powerhouse of the world... Home to the most powerful family on the planet - the Windsors. It has the most elite and well trained military in the world. It is as(or more) technologically advanced as the USA as they jointly develop all their military technology with them. Britain also has far more diplomatic clout than any other Western country as it is a key member of the largest and most powerful economy in the world - the European Union.

The US are INFAMOUS for their cowardice in the face of these states... Including Russia and China - which has the largest Army in the world (twice the size of the US army).. Say what you will, because history proves how accurate I am in saying this. The US would do well by staying far from this conflict... or they will forcibly receive a very public spanking
