The day I call momma to tell her boy made it, will be the day I get a savannah cat.

A savannah cat is a mix of the wild African serval:

And then a domestic cat, usually the Bengal cat, which is the peasent alternative to the savannah cat:

The resulting breed is known as a F1 Savannah cat (F1, F2, F3 measured as generations removed from the serval cat).

Savannah cats can grow to be 30 lbs and are very smart and sociable. Their personality is more like a dog and you can walk them with or without a leash plus play fetch with them.

That is one handsome cat:

An F1 savannah cat is going to cost you a good 10-20K usd, so not a cheap pet.

Why spend 20k on this when you can get a dog? I mean, it's cool looking and unique and all but it's still no dog.

For the same reason anyone gets a cat over a dog.

Some of us prefer cats for practical reasons.

Savannahs are awesome.

But this is the cat that's the most dog-like apparently so his point is valid. Why get a $10k cat that's dog-like when you can just get a dog for 1/10th that.

You ready to live with a wild animal? You got kids?

I grew up with a Bengal (yes, we were peasants.) I still have scars on my arms and legs from that thing. It would stalk all of us children around the house. I would come out of the shower in a bath towel and it would be hidden, lying in wait. Bastard would pounce (they are extremely fast) then latch onto my bare leg with front paws, scratching the shit out of my leg with the back claws while biting me repeatedly and drawing blood. He was later declawed (for obvious reasons) but still well WILD.

Now keep in mind that this wasn't an abused cat, he was well fed and treated like a prince. Nobody provoked him into attacking. These were just his natural instincts. He was smart as hell, a lot of fun. He liked to swim in the bathtub and would only drink running water, never from a dish. We had to leave the tap open slightly for him.

So yes, they are awesome animals ... but if you have kids you should really think about it. Also any other pets in the house better be able to defend themselves.

Because it isnt a dog. It is a cat. Do I really need to explain the differences in owning a cat vs a dog?

Isn't that what we're all doing?

I think there are varying degrees of wild vs domesticated and these cats are leaning further toward the dangerous side. When you look at hybrid cat breeds like this that are in their infancy (like 20 years) there is just a bigger margin for the unknown. You are putting the "wild" back into house cats which have been living with humans since ancient Egypt.

I think they are awesome animals. But there is a reason they are illegal to own in some states of the US. They can be dangerous.

Your experience doesn't seem to be the norm. If you get a 3rd generation savannah, the serval is a small percentage. Even a first generation should be quite well behaved. Some cats are just mean, maybe yours was. An actual serval cat would act like you described in addition to pissing all over and pouncing on you when you least expect it. In any case, I read you can't let it outside because it will jump over your fence and go chase a rabbit or something and in that case I don't want it, since cats should really be allowed to run outside. Maybe 4th generation bengal cat though.
