Facebook is suffering from multiple personality syndrome. I'd love to be a fly on the wall in advertising meetings at Facebook HQ.

I wonder if netflix, dating, and web hosting also fall into Facebook's definition of "recurring billing."

It's completely ridiculous, they are many completely legitimate recurring billing products, like your example of hosting.

they don't give a fuck. they probably had the best Q1 ever. now they tighten up until the next time they need money.

Facebook is going to have a tough time. Unless they figure out how to make money off the traffic they receive. They have no revenue and guess what. A business without revenue is worth squat. They might as well become a charity. Its all Bullshit about the CEO being worth a billion dollars. Youtube as revenue Myspace has revenue but Facebook is a Joke. They cant have it both ways User experience and advertising. They need some Google advertising guys in there to fucking get them running a solid system I lump them in with yahoo and MSN for the worst fucking advertising system.

If "say goodbye to facebook" means that Facebook is losing good revenue sources, then it makes perfect sense. I love how they lifted regulations for a short time, and then tightened up again so quickly.

It shows us two things:

1. They are fucking clueless on how to run a business.
2. The rebilling model is going to get tougher and tougher for affiliates to promote. I am sure Google will crack down on other niches soon as well.

There are so many channels of advertising on the web you can easily run a multi-million dollars affiliate business without spending 1 dollar on advertising with facebook and still get better CTR and ROI. The reason Facebook lifted advertising regulations is cause they "NEED" affiliate marketer's(huge advertising spenders). As brand advertisers are cutting costs. Facebook realize they are being crushed by Google and Myspace on advertising dollars at the same time they are one of the highest ranked websites out there. They better quickly learn how to monteitze there traffic before analysis see how the next so-called "steve jobs" is a smoke and mirrors college student that know nothing about the business world. I can see Newsweek Headline now "Facebook Bubble has Burst" they remind me of Napster. Especially since trends come and go and facebook targets a demographic of people that are very fickle and jump easy to the next cool thing. I hope to see them at Adtech trying to convince Affiliates why they should advertise on facebook. What a complete Joke. The only thing that worked on facebook was the apps and they screwed up by not taking a cut of that they should have followed apples foot steps.

Im going to chuck a bucket of shit over their stall at ad tech.

its not that they aren't allowed...they just need to say exactly how the billing occurs...much different from not being allowed...i still think people will buy

What if the offer states that it is a subscription?

By definition, people know up front that they are going to be paying every month/yr.

SECTION 18
Subscription Services
The advertisement of Subscription Services must comply with the conditions noted below and as determined by Facebook in its sole discretion. "Subscription Services" may include sites that promote downloading ringtones, wallpaper, or text messages for predictions, love life advice, news, personality quizzes, or other entertainment services or any site that induces a user to sign up for recurring billing of a product or service.
Subscription Services conditions:
The promoted website clearly and accurately displays the pricing of the offer on the landing page of the website as well as on the page where a user opts into the offer.
If your site requires users to submit personal information, your site must prominently display the price and billing interval (such as per week or once per month) on the page where users first enter personal information (such as a name or phone number).
If users sign up to your service by transmitting a code by text message, the price and billing interval must be clearly and prominently displayed beside the code.
If your service is a subscription, you must provide a prominent opt-in checkbox or other clear mechanism indicating that the user knowingly accepts the price and subscription service. This should be on the first page users enter personal data, and the user should not be able to proceed without opting in.
All of the items above should be located in a prominent place on your webpage and should be easy to find, read, and understand.

Spoke with our contact there yesterday as well. She also said no recurring billing unless it was a well know brand ex: Blockbuster, Weight Watchers etc. She also said they were basically going to kick everyone off the network as they review their approvals standards over the next two weeks or so.

Bottom line is they are trying to "clean up" their advertising and only work with advertisers who are doing things the right way. Hopefully they come to the right conclusions.

So yes, recurring billing when done right (full disclosure, customer service etc) is legit and you should be able to contact your rep to have your specific offering reviewed.

Facebook is managed like there is a 5 year old at the head of the table. (I know- Ive got a 5 year old)
One day its one thing, two days later, complete 180...who has the patience to build a business based on that..? Especially those who bank hard, with 6+ figure a month budgets? You work hard, you test. You get amazing CTR's, test your landers, get great ad text and images, and they all run like well oiled machines..and then WHAM.
And Im NOT referring to grants, acai etc. Pin submits should be allowed...if idiots cant read, what can I tell you. There is a small wing of the Government called the FTC...they handle issues that are fraudulent et al. Let them bang the idiots who run the Obama stimulus ads et al...

Google changes it up occasionally, as does YSM and MSN, but FB ....holy hand grenades...such as joke.

With the economy tanking, big advertisers going for brand are running away...and FB users traditionally dont BUY....so, how to monetize? Us AM's were the perfect solution...they just dont know how to MANAGE us. They allow too much duplication..too much scammy shit being peddaled etc.

Dear FB "Board of Directors":

I suggest you allow:
A) legit diet
B) dating
C) And ANY other legit offer that is not hate, porn et al, just like Google...
D) Quit changing the rules every other day.

That's too funny Erin, worst thing is though I could totally see them believing the crap they spew.

Facebook never managed to attract enough "legit" advertisers (and how would they, social sites are shit for branding, so that only leaves direct response/performance conscious companies) that could actually help pay the bills, yet somehow with the current economic climate Facebook out of all sites has found the holy grail.

And I agree with affiliatearmy, the complete inconsistency is Facebook's biggest problem. Why would I bother with Facebook's ever changing rules, guidelines, policies and their useless reviewers, if there is 10 other places out there that will gladly take my money and not pull some stunt on me every other month. Even Google is more consistent than that, and they actually give you advance notice. Especially in the current economic climate, where CPMs are dropping across the board and brand advertisers are slashing their budget.

But hey, if this doesn't work out expect some new guidelines next month. Maybe they'll actually find something that works for them if they just change things often enough.
