Scariest Shit Yoself Movies Ever

"The Exorcist" will forever be one the most frightening movies in existence.

As far as foreign horror movies go, Rec and Rec 2 take the cake. "Rec" is basically the Spanish version of "Quarantine" - and let me tell you, Hollywood simply can't keep up.

This movie has one of the most badass scenes in cinematic history. I won't ruin it for you...

...Fuck, okay I will: A Roman Catholic Priest blows a demonically possessed infant's brains all over a wall with a pump-action shotgun. No warning, nothing.

I had to readjust my face after that one.

Infanticide FTW.

I saw JAWS when I was 10 yo and then like 5 days later I was out 5 miles in the Gulf of Mexico snorkeling around the boat while my Mom was getting her open water SCUBA certification. I was looking down at the COOL mushroom shaped air bubbles floating up from them. I hadn't noticed the SCHOOL of BARRACUDA'S that had surrounded me. Once I did, I SLOWLY made my way BACK TO THE BOAT, climbed up into it, and STAYED THERE!!!!

I still remember one night shortly after that I was swimming in our pool and someone turned the pool light and the Lanai light out while I was swimming under water. I came straight up to the surface and got out of the pool as fast as I could. Then went inside almost in tears asking WHO turned the lights out on me!!! (I had the SHARK image quite clear in the water in the DARK. Lulz)

Since I grew up in Hawaii and Florida I have been around the Salt Water quite a bit. To this day I still have the SHARK thing in the back of my mind.

Of course I saw this the same year when I was 10 yo as well.

I lived in a Golf Course community away from any REAL woods, but after THAT movie I was VERY NERVOUS to even cut across the Golf Course to get back home from a friend's house AFTER DARK!!!! ROFLMAO!!

The movie itself didn't seem too scary. I saw it when it first came out at the theater. I was 19 yo then and in the Marine Corp.

For a few nights after seeing it the sheets moving across my toes would get my attention and have me thinking of Freddy's Razor Knives.

I liked how the writers made SLEEP the situation for when you would be attacked. The time when you're the most defenseless.

lol

None of these movies seemed TOO Scary while watching, but they PLANTED the seeds in my mind that then caused some [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbYT3UclhNY"]"Altered States" [/ame]in my everyday world!!

...I loved the Evil Dead movies too.

I know that the Evil Dead series is technically considered horror, but did anyone find them scary? I was thought they were too tongue in cheek to be scary, and the last one "Army of Darkness" was just flat ass funny. One of my favorite movies of any genre.

Bruce Campbell FTW.

+1 to "Army of Darkness", Mike. That movie is badass! :) (not scary though)

People's tastes are certainly different, and what some find scary - others find dull, and vice versa. Some of the movies mentioned here I found flat out bad, boring, or dull. Mama was a disappointment, and so was Cabin in the Woods.

Classics like Jaws, Poltergeist, The Shining, and The Exorcist were definitely on top of their game when they came out - and I found them scary when I first saw them as a teenager in the 80's. But nowadays - let's face it, they don't hold up to some of the very best horror movies made in the last 10-15 years. I would probably sleep through the aforementioned movies if I watched them again.

As of today, some of the very best and scariest horror movies I have seen are below. These have genuine scares in them, or build suspense to where you almost can't take it anymore:

The Tunnel (MUST see!)
The Descent (great movie)
The Grudge (Japan)
The 4th Kind
The Eye (Thailand?)
Grave Encounters
House of the Devil (the remake)
REC (Spain)
REC2 (Spain)
Sinister
Paranormal Activity (I also liked the sequel)
V/H/S (short films, some better than others)
Blair Witch Project
The Woman in Black

Notice a trend here? :) I generally find movies with a supernatural twist scarier. Some people think real life situations are scarier though, like serial killer stories, or slasher films.

So technically, horror should be divided into two sub-genres: Horror/Sci-Fi, and Horror/Realism. :)

You're welcome, horror nerds.

I watched Blair Witch Project last night and wasn't very impressed. It was very anti-climatic. I was waiting the entirety of the movie to see what the blair witch looked like and nothing ever happened.

I downloaded [REC] to watch with my girlfriend tonight. We'll see how it goes.
