Hey all :thumbsup:

The short version: About two years ago I sold a site for $1,600 that had been high in the serps for about a month and had already made nearly $300 that month. Anywho, did a short sell as I was brand new to seo and wanted to cash out.

About 2 weeks after selling the buyer contacted me; not happy! He had been building links and the site tanked. Whether that was his fault or mine in building links.. who knows? Time has passed and that domain has expired. I just re-purchased it and gonna give it another go. Ahrefs says it still has about 132 backlinks. Most of what I had "thrown" at it was amit's social links & 1 of stacy's high pr packages.

What is your experiences with buying domains that used to rank high and then dropped rankings? Note: It was not blacklisted -- just dropped way way down in the serps. Any hope?

Have all pages dropped in SERPs? Or just some? Do they have irrelevant, low quality backlinks?

If you are being penalized, the obvious answer is to go to GWT, add your site, wait until it flags backlinks, then disavow them.

There is a reason that dude let the domain drop. "Someone" tanked it. Why spend any time and effort on a domain that's already negative instead of one that is brand new? It's easier to go form zero to positive instead of negative to zero to positive.

Seems like a waste of time, tbh.

@zxcvb
There weren't any junk links before I sold it. Good idea on checking GWT and getting rid of junk.

@CCarter,
Never thought of it like that -- great point!

@golan,
Yeah I know. Doesn't make sense!

Overall not entirely sure what route I'm going to go. I already purchased the domain. Maybe use it for a case study in the near future. Already working on another site for same niche -- don't want to compete with myself 0_o
