Why sir, I do believe that those are the most obviously not opt-in emails I've ever seen. I go to MSU, and know their e-mail format. You just appended initials onto the end of the last names, then a number and ran them through against the server looking for rejections/bounces.

Yeah, that's what they looked like to me, but wasn't sure. The university that I went to did a similar thing, although they just took the first four letters of your last name and then added numbers to the end. With 40-50k students there, I always wondered what they did with the people who had the last name of smith. You'd think that would run out after awhile.
