SEO - Posts or Pages?

i'm trying to follow you here ...

so you had pages for your longtails but only built links to the main page? Then you started building to your other pages and began ranking?

I had built too many links with varied anchors to my main page, so I started building other pages (deeper) and linked to those with various anchors and began ranking again.

The way I've set mine up is:
- Key Services = Pages (main service is sticky front page)
- FAQ's / Updates added to page via shortcode so I can add a "post" to my page so therefore fresh etc without big issues and bag some long tails.
- Posts used for "news" articles and items that are most have temporary "stickyness" of interest that then link back to my "pillar pages". example here being X site said this about why you should do Service Y [link to page] OR stat Z released by AGENCY shows Y is awesome etc. etc.

Benefit in my mind
1) Pillars on topic and geared to convert always updated with fresh content.
2) Site as a whole updated via Social / News buzz to gain Brand Recognition/ engagement with ruining the PR / Linkbuild effort on the Pillar pages but contributing to the authority of site and said pillar pages.

Hope thats useful ;)

Use "pages" for keyword targeted terms.

Use posts for fresh content (keyword targeted or not), news items, or any time sensitive information. Interlink keywords in your posts to your pages, to help support them.

I'm starting to think that maybe I was wrong in my previous post and that this is the best way to go about it.

I'm currently experimenting across my sites, varying between using pages and posts to see which one really works better. I have one site - which is coincidentally PR3 - but any time I make a new article for it (I've been using pages only for this one) it ranks extremely quickly and easily, even with 0 offpage SEO done.

On another site, which uses only posts, I make new posts targeting keywords but they rank very slowly if at all. However, this site is a PR0. It used to rank #4 for its EMD term, so I know it's possible for it to rank and everything (it's currently dancing/dead/in limbo).

So I can't be sure whether or not the quick ranking is due to the PR of my site, or if it's because I'm using pages.
