Hey all...relatively new here but have lurked forever. Been an SEO for 5 years. I chose to work solely with one company last year, and each time I hit a goal a new line is drawn. What this has led to is me constantly feeling like I am not doing well...pretty classic scenario for most jobs.

I would love some answers to these questions. Feel free to elaborate but would love to bring some solid numbers to the boss so he can have a dose of realism once in a while.

If you are an SEO:

How many KW's and Phrases are you responsible for ranking?

How many are too many?

What price do you charge for working on groups of KW's and phrases(monthly price range plz)?

Do you make a salary?

What's your budget per month for diversifying your SEO tool efforts(link building, PR's, etc...)

Thanks all.

The rule is that you should never spend more than twice as much money on SEO as it brings in, so my monthly budget is $5.

Do market research by yourself, don't ask the forum to do it.

How hard is to take a look on the endless competition? Do a search on Google and you will find plenty of seo plans ideas.

The answers are going to be drastically different for those who WORK for a company on salary vs those doing it contract / agency.

Step 1) Brand yourself as a inbound marketing agency.
Step 2) Stop focusing on keywords. Start focusing on revenue and delivering value.
Step 3) Triple your monthly fee.
Step 4) ?????
Step 5) Profit.

5 years in SEO and you've not had a soul to network with?

Doesn't matter, OP!

I'd say start with some research as to what SEOs on the google first page are charging. Mail/call them posing as a buyer.

Just write the goddamn mail and make sure you hit the 'send' button. In case you don't know what to write in that mail, open another thread.

Don't sell keywords unless those people you sell to are idiots, because only idiots think SEO can be delegated into ranking for a specific number of keywords, when reality is that ranking better for one will help the others.

Get a retainer of hours, that is, they have a set amount of hours pr. month. Can be used for linkbuilding, on site stuff, general chit chat etc. Bill more than you think and according to what you think they can pay.

Between $75-$150 / hour.

But now I am of course assuming you are actually working as an SEO consultant with actual agency experience and not a linkspammer (no disrespect to those).

If you're not working as an agency or well known consultant then you should become one if you want to do 'SEO', which again isn't the same as selling links.

How would you even say these are solid real numbers to him? Your boss obviously undervalues SEO as it is.

This should be increasing if you hit bigger goals as you bring in more money.

How many KW's and Phrases are you responsible for ranking?

How many are too many?

This doesn't matter honestly. All that matters is the amount of sales/revenue made by your efforts. Shit you could slang your product/service on craigslist and if the ROI is dope then who gives a fuck?

Worry about giving your clients results. Focus on making them as much money as possible, treat their business as if it were your own.

Think about how much increased revenue they are getting from you and go from there. You could be charging them $500 a month or $5000 a month, it all depends on what field they are in and how much you're actually helping them.

None of this matters for the most part.

You work a job. HR or your boss has determined what they are willing to pay for your positions already, so trying to get a raise is going to be an uphill battle. Lets pretend you get it though, you gonna be happy with 5-10% more then you make now? Really? For the same or even increased work load? If you want more pay and less work, the best option is hop to another job most times. Easiest $20-30k salary increase you can get and many times doing the same or less work.

Second, make a new line in the sand when you hit goals is natural. Your boss doesn't want you to start slacking off and wants to see more and more results each month/quarter/year, etc. If he doesnt push you, who will?

^^ Also, its natural for them to try to see where your limit is. Once they find your limit, then they will do something else ( bring someone else in to help you, change strategies, etc )

I could give you all the research in the world, but in the end your boss knows what you are worth, how much he is willing to spend on your payroll, and what your limits are.

Thats like going back to your GF or wife and saying, "see look, I have evidence that 70% of all GF's/wives are doing anal 3 times a week". If your bitch aint into it, you aint getting it.
