Should I eliminate the PC+Laptop for a Laptop+Dock+Monitors?

Desktop is much more cost effective, versatile, powerful, and can be upgraded one component at a time and repaired easier if something goes on it. Plus I am still considering something like QNAP Systems, Inc. ( TS-459 Pro+ Turbo NAS ) - Quality Network Appliance Provider or the 1 U rack unit with dual power supplies for redundant home storage and VPN. Access your files from the road from your home server so no need to sync files on 2 machines. I would then buy a reasonably priced laptop.

Buy a quality desktop on a recent chipset/platform so you can add to it in the future, you said you were aiming at a price tag of 1K. I sold my PC for a laptop, and I don't regret it, though I do miss the power and reliability of a good desktop. I suggest setting $1K as your maximum budget for the desktop, and scrape together $500-$700 for a thin and light laptop you can do basic tasks with on the go. You can always sell your old laptop for a few bucks.

I was considering a NAS as well, but I've convinced myself I'd rather build my own home server for a slightly higher price.

I was in the same position last year so I custom built a desktop with a i7 processor, 16gbs of ram, four 500GB internal hard drives and two 22inch monitors. I still wanted a laptop for mobility so I bought a IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad from the Lenovo Outlet Like others have said here before, a desktop is better when it comes to scalability. Laptops tend to burn out after two years.

Thanks for the input, I think I'll be going with the desktop + laptop option.

Been looking around for some deals, and I've sorta been leaning towards building my own, but I saw this deal which looks pretty sick. What do you guys think?

EDIT: on second thought, I probably wouldn't go with it.. I'm sure they skimped on the quality of parts, and I think I may prefer a six-core Phenom II X6

I have the AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition 3.2GHz, OC to 4.0 GHz (on air), CPU/NB Freq 3000 MHz. The baby flies and is pretty easy to overclock because it has a unlocked multiplier.

I'd never buy a pre built desktop, all about building one to your own spec with the best parts.
