Slow Ass Macbook Pro?

My Macbook Pro has become pretty slow and sluggish. Applications take a very long time to load, the entire system locks up for a minute or so when doing basic tasks such as switching windows or opening new tabs, the hard disk seems to be spinning incessantly, and overall it has become a pretty shitty computer. It's 3 years old.

Is there software I can use that can help speed it back up again, should I reformat/reinstall/update Mac OS, or is it just time to get rid of it?

Believe it or not, but you don't need a faster CPU or more RAM or even a whole new computer. Put in an SSD and it will last you 5 more years. The same thing applies to Windows PC's

The way people think about Macs I never actually thought this could happen. But like older versions of Windows, you should probably back up all your data and wipe everything and do a fresh install.

Oh and also just place it in the toilet and flush, that will fix everything.

Which OS are you running - if you are still on leopard, get snow leopard. And you do run Disc Utility now and then, right?

Run disk utility - fix/repair permissions. If it's still slow, might be a bad hard drive if you say you can hear it running. Then upgrade to SSD.

Maybe buy some cleaning software, like CleanMyMac. Also try OmniDiscSweeper (it's free), which will show you where you've accumulated any shit and you can clean if needed.

Go to System Pref > Accounts > Login Items and it shows everything that starts with your system. You don't need anything in here. Highlight the items and click the '-' until you've got rid of what you don't want/need.

Spent some time on a friends one the other day and it was like new after an a period with CleanMyMac, OmniDiscSweeper and the startup items.

Also how full is your drive? Do you hear any regular ticking sounds from the HDD? It might be that your drive is about to die - my last drive to die made my system run fucking shit, so get yourself a backup just incase.

I think it just happens less frequently - it's headline news when it happens though. ;)

For some retarded reason, storing large numbers of items on the desktop can cause major performance issues on osx.

I had nearly 800 items on my desktop and my mbp was running horribly. I moved them from my desktop into another folder and, like magic, my macbook pro was running just as well as when I first got it two years back.

Give it a go. It might fix the problem.

Thanks guys. No, I never ran disk utility or any cleaning software but I will do so now. Also my desktop is extremely full with all sorts of files and folders so I will look into cleaning that up.

I added the "activity monitor" to my dock since lion - it helps you see how your resources are used and what makes the computer slow, the disc utility idea could also solve everything in a couple of minutes.

Launch "font book" and look for duplicate fonts. Delete all duplicates. I have no idea why this happens or why deleting them makes such a difference but it changes my wife's macbook pro boot times from about 4 min to under 30 seconds. Back to good as new. :-)
